Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island — The Blue Sea of Northern Okinawa
The northern tip of Okinawa's main island (Honto) rewards those who make the two-hour journey from Naha with a concentration of natural beauty and marine spectacle unmatched in the prefecture. The twin highlights of Churaumi Aquarium's whale shark grandeur and Kouri Island's jewel-blue sea and romantic bridge make for one of Okinawa's most satisfying full-day itineraries.
Highlights
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, in Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula, anchors the morning: the 7,500-cubic-meter Kuroshio Sea tank and its whale sharks are a spectacle of overwhelming marine scale. The park's dolphin lagoon, manatee pool, and coral reef tank round out the marine experience. Kouri Island, accessible via the 1,960-meter Kouri-ohashi Bridge from Yagaji Island, offers a different quality of blue: the bridge crosses water of such intense turquoise clarity that driving across it feels like floating above the ocean. The island itself is small and lush, with Heart Rock beach (two naturally heart-shaped coral formations in the surf beloved by couples) and Kouri Ocean Tower, a restaurant-and-viewpoint structure offering 360-degree ocean panoramas. The drive from Ocean Expo Park to Kouri Bridge (about 30 minutes) passes through rural Okinawan countryside of sugarcane, pineapple fields, and fishing villages.
Getting There & Tips
A rental car is strongly recommended for this itinerary. From Naha, drive north on the expressway to Kyoda IC, then follow signs to Motobu/Ocean Expo Park. Kouri Island is 25 minutes further north. Allow 3–4 hours for the aquarium and park, 1.5–2 hours for Kouri Island. Aquarium admission is approximately ¥2,180.
Best Time to Visit
Year-round, but November–May offers clearer water visibility and more comfortable outdoor temperatures. The bridge and ocean views are most vivid in morning light. Avoid Golden Week and Obon for crowds. Typhoon risk peaks August–September.
