5 Photogenic Power Spots in Okinawa

Okinawa, where the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom and the breath of the gods reside. In fact, unique sacred sites and beautiful places of prayer, a bit different from the mainland, are dotted about. Vivid vermilion, mysterious forests, contrast with the blue sky—this time we have carefully selected five photogenic power spots that make you think "I want to go take photos!"

① Naminoue Shrine｜Naha

Okinawa's oldest shrine, where a vermilion-lacquered shrine building stands grandly atop a sheer cliff. The contrast of the blue sea, white rock face, and vivid red is a one-and-only view you can absolutely see nowhere else. Shooting in the soft light of early morning makes the shrine stand out even more vividly. A wide composition that includes the sea through the torii gate is especially recommended. It is accessible by bus from central Naha, so by all means make it the start of your trip.

② Sefa-utaki｜Nanjo City

The Ryukyu Kingdom's highest sacred site, and a World Heritage Site. The triangular arch of "Sangui," born from giant rocks overlapping, is just like a door to another world. A cloudy sky or a misty day creates a fantastical atmosphere, an excellent chance if you're aiming for a photogenic shot. With a backlit shot that makes use of the light pouring in from deep within the arch, you get a shot full of mystery. About 40 minutes by car from Naha.

③ Shuri Castle｜Naha City

The beauty of Ryukyu architecture, where red and gold seem to blaze. Even now, with restoration work progressing, the space in front of the main hall and the stone-paved "Una" (courtyard) are superb photography spots. Right after the gates open first thing in the morning is recommended, with few people and soft light. A vertical composition with the red castle walls as a backdrop, and a low-angle shot making use of the stone pavement's depth, are surely Instagrammable. About 15 minutes on foot from the monorail's "Shuri Station."

④ Tamaudun｜Naha City

The mausoleum of the Ryukyu royal family, right beside Shuri Castle. The scenery woven by rugged Ryukyu limestone and deep greenery is solemn and photogenic. Shooting in the front-lit morning makes the texture of the stone stand out, and a weighty atmosphere seeps into the photo. A symmetrical composition capturing the stone-paved approach head-on is popular for being photogenic. Visiting it together with Shuri Castle lets you tour efficiently.

⑤ Asato Hachimangu｜Naha City

A spot rare in Okinawa, with an atmosphere close to mainland shrine architecture. The quiet approach surrounded by greenery and the vermilion-lacquered torii gate are beautiful, and it is known even locally as a hidden gem. During the time slot when the evening slanting light pours in, the dappled sunlight and the torii overlap, creating a fantastical golden space. A low-angle shot looking up at the torii from below, and a composition with depth wrapped in the greenery of the approach, are recommended. The good access, about 5 minutes on foot from "Asato Station" on the Yui Rail, is also appealing.

Okinawa's power spots are appealing for their unique atmosphere where history, nature, and faith become one. By all means, take a camera in hand and feel the mysterious Ryukyu world.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening hours / closing days: Sefa-utaki is open 9:00-18:00 from March to October (tickets sold until 17:15 / last entry 17:30) and 9:00-17:30 from November to February (tickets sold until 16:45 / last entry 17:00). It closes on six days a year designated as rest days: the 1st to 3rd days of the fifth month and the 1st to 3rd days of the tenth month of the lunar calendar (the dates shift each year because they follow the lunar calendar). At Shuri Castle Park, from July to November the free areas are open 8:00-19:30 and the paid area 8:30-19:00 (admission tickets sold until 18:30).
• Fees: Sefa-utaki costs 300 yen for adults, 150 yen for elementary and junior high school students, and 200 yen for groups of 20 or more. From October 1, 2026 these are scheduled to be revised to 600 yen for adults, 300 yen for elementary and junior high school students, and 500 yen for groups. Tickets are bought at the ticket counter (automated ticket machines) in the Nanjo City Regional Products Center. At Shuri Castle Park an admission fee is required only for the paid area, and web tickets are also sold. Strolling around Naminoue Shrine and Tamaudun, and worshipping at Asato Hachimangu itself, are free of charge.
• Access: Sefa-utaki is about 40 minutes by car from Naha. Shuri Castle Park is about a 15-minute walk from Shuri Station on the Yui Rail (there is a route via Shureimon Gate and a route via Uenomo Park). Asato Hachimangu is about a 7-minute walk from Asato Station on the Yui Rail, or take Ryukyu Bus route 5, 14 or 15 from the Naha Bus Terminal, get off at Asato and walk about 5 minutes.
• Parking: Shuri Castle Park has car parks P1 and P2, and real-time availability can be checked on the official website (information on nearby private car parks is also given there). Sefa-utaki is reached from the Nanjo City Regional Products Center side.
• Etiquette for worship: Sefa-utaki is the highest sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom and a place where prayers are still offered today. Worship quietly and with respect: do not cross in front of people praying at the places of worship, do not talk loudly, and do not take stones or plants away with you.
• Photography rules: At Sefa-utaki, entry beyond the entrance of the Sangui is restricted, and ordinary worshippers and visitors cannot go inside. Take your photographs from in front of the entrance. Refrain from photographing people at prayer or the interiors of places of worship without permission. At Shuri Castle Park the main hall is undergoing reconstruction work, so always follow the no-entry signs around the work areas and the instructions of staff.
• Safety notes: At Sefa-utaki the path runs over stone paving and rocky slopes that are especially slippery in the rain, so wear shoes that are easy to walk in. Okinawa's sunshine and humidity are strong, so bring a hat and drinking water and be careful of heatstroke.

Note: Because entry to the Sangui at Sefa-utaki is restricted, it is not possible to photograph the light streaming in from beyond the arch; read any such description as photography from in front of the entrance. The main hall of Shuri Castle has been confirmed to enter service (open to the general public) on November 23, 2026.
