10:00 Visit Osaka Castle Tower Inside the tower is a museum where you can easily learn about Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the warring states era. Admission is around 1,200 yen for adults as a guide, and it opens from 9:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:30. The top floor observation deck offers sweeping views of the city. Allow about one hour for the visit.

11:30 Stroll through Nishinomaru Garden Take a break at Nishinomaru Garden, a wide lawn garden with the tower as its backdrop. Entry is a modest 200 yen or so for adults, and the expanse of grass looking up at the tower is exceptional. It is known as a cherry blossom spot in spring, and in some years the garden opens at night during the blossom season.

12:30 Lunch in Tanimachi Leave the castle and enjoy a local lunch in the nearby Tanimachi area. Options range from okonomiyaki to udon. Fuel up well to prepare for the afternoon moves.

14:00 Move to Namba for a street walk Head to Namba by subway. From the nearest Tanimachi 4-chome Station it is around twenty minutes transferring between the Tanimachi Line and lines such as the Midosuji Line. Shopping spots such as Namba Parks and Takashimaya are gathered here.

16:00 Enjoy comedy at Namba Grand Kagetsu If you want to experience the famous comedy culture of Osaka, watching manzai or a comedy play at Namba Grand Kagetsu (NGK) is a great choice. It is about a five to six minute walk from Namba Station. Show schedules and prices vary by day, so checking tickets in advance on the official site is reassuring.

17:30 Dinner in Namba From the evening, enjoy Osaka cuisine in the dining streets of Namba. Savor local flavors like kushikatsu and takoyaki to round off the course.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Assumptions for this course: Roughly 7-8 hours from Osaka Castle Park to Namba. Travel is basically by public transport such as the subway and JR lines.
• Opening hours and closing days of each facility: Osaka Castle Museum (the main tower) is open 9:00-18:00 (last admission 30 minutes before closing, i.e. 17:30) and closed over the New Year period (December 28 to January 1). Nishinomaru Garden is open 9:00-17:00 (March to October) and 9:00-16:30 (November to February), with last entry 30 minutes before closing and hours extended to 20:00 during the cherry blossom season. It is closed every Monday and over the New Year period.
• Guide to fees: The Osaka Castle main tower costs 1,200 yen for adults and 600 yen for university and high school students (student ID required), and is free for junior high school students and younger. Group rates (1,080 yen for adults, 540 yen for university and high school students) apply to parties of 15 or more paying visitors. Nishinomaru Garden costs 200 yen for adults and is free for junior high school students and younger, for Osaka City residents aged 65 and over and for visitors with disabilities (proof of eligibility required).
• Access: Osakajokoen Station and Morinomiya Station on the JR Osaka Loop Line, Osakajo-kitazume Station on the JR Tozai Line, Tanimachi 4-chome Station on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi and Chuo lines, Morinomiya Station on the Chuo and Nagahori Tsurumi-ryokuchi lines, Temmabashi Station on the Tanimachi Line, and Osaka Business Park Station on the Nagahori Tsurumi-ryokuchi Line, among others. • Parking: The car park in front of Osakajokoen Station (171 spaces) and the Morinomiya car park (143 spaces) are open around the clock. Rates are 400 yen per hour from 8:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, 500 yen per hour on weekends and public holidays, and 200 yen per hour from 22:00 to 8:00. Group buses use the Jonan No. 1 and No. 2 car parks (1,500 yen per hour from 8:00 to 22:00).
• What needs a reservation: You can enter the main tower without a reservation, but admission tickets can also be bought in advance through the booking site linked from the official website. Performances at Namba Grand Kagetsu change in programme and price from day to day, so it is best to check the official website in advance and arrange tickets.
• Points to note: Nishinomaru Garden is closed every Monday, so if you visit on a Monday, leave it out of your itinerary or replace it with a stroll around the main tower. Last admission to the main tower is 17:30. There are slopes and gravel paths in the park, so wear comfortable shoes.
