Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi Food Walk Course

Osaka is known as the city where you eat until you drop. This half-day plan centers on a food walk, tasting famous dishes beneath the flashy signs of Dotonbori and enjoying some shopping in Shinsaibashi. The total route takes about five hours, so come with an empty stomach.

Course Route

11:00 Start at Dotonbori Begin your stroll at Dotonbori, lined with photogenic spots such as the Glico sign and the giant crab of Kani Doraku. First take a photo of the Glico sign from Ebisubashi Bridge to capture a truly Osaka moment. The nearest are Namba and Shinsaibashi stations on the Midosuji subway line, both a few minutes walk away.

11:30 Snack on takoyaki Start with takoyaki, an Osaka specialty. Crispy outside and soft inside, enjoy them piping hot as you walk along the river. Popular shops draw lines, so be ready to wait a little. Aiming for right after opening lets you buy relatively smoothly.

12:30 Lunch with okonomiyaki Sit at the griddle and watch your okonomiyaki cook right in front of you. The savory aroma of the sauce is irresistible. Restaurants are scattered within a few minutes walk of Dotonbori, so if one is crowded, compare a few nearby.

14:00 Shopping in Shinsaibashi Suji Head to the covered Shinsaibashi Suji shopping street. It is a short walk from Dotonbori and, being roofed, is reassuring even in the rain. Walk north browsing a variety of shops from fashion to goods and drugstores. Many stores handle tax-free shopping and are popular with overseas travelers.

15:30 A break with kushikatsu End the food walk with kushikatsu. Follow the no double-dipping rule and enjoy the freshly fried, crispy skewers. You can order them one at a time, so it is easy to taste a little of everything.

16:00 Cruise on the Tombori River Cruise Finish with the Tombori River Cruise along the Dotonbori River, taking in the streetscape from the water. The ride lasts about twenty minutes, and the fare is around 2,000 yen for adults as a guide. It runs roughly every hour on the hour and half hour, and with the guides lively commentary you soak up the afterglow of a busy day. The pier is the Tazaemonbashi landing in front of the Don Quijote near Ebisubashi.

The way to enjoy this course is to try many shops a little at a time rather than eating a lot at once. When eating while walking, be considerate of others and stop at designated spots to enjoy your food. The Tombori River Cruise runs roughly on the hour and half hour, so deciding your closing time in advance keeps things flowing. After dusk the signs light up all at once, giving you a dazzling Dotonbori quite different from the daytime.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Assumptions for this course: Roughly 4-5 hours from Dotonbori to Shinsaibashi. The area is compact enough to cover on foot, so you will be walking almost the whole way.
• Opening hours and closing days of each facility: The Tombori River Cruise runs from the 11:00 departure to the 21:00 departure, leaving Tazaemonbashi Pier on the hour and half hour (each trip takes about 20 minutes). Sailings may be cancelled or rescheduled without notice because of river works, local festivals or events, and are also suspended depending on weather and tide levels. Restaurants have their own opening hours, so check individually for any place you want to visit.
• Guide to fees: The Tombori River Cruise costs 2,000 yen for adults, 1,000 yen for students (junior high, high school, university and vocational school students; student ID required) and 500 yen for children (elementary school age). One child below elementary school age travels free per adult, with the child's fare payable from the second child onwards. Street food starts at a few hundred yen an item.
• Access: A few minutes' walk from Namba Station or Shinsaibashi Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line. Tazaemonbashi Pier, where the boats depart, is just east of Ebisubashi, on the riverside in front of the Don Quijote Dotonbori store.
• What needs a reservation: The Tombori River Cruise has accepted online reservations since November 2025. In busy periods it is safest to book in advance or buy your boarding ticket early.
• Points to note: The cruise boats are open-topped with no roof; simple rain ponchos are provided in wet weather, but they will not cover your belongings. Umbrellas may not be used on board because the boat passes under low bridges. Sailings go ahead in light rain. Ebisubashi is a bridge with heavy foot traffic, so do not set up a tripod or stand still for long periods; take your photos where you will not block the way. The rule against double-dipping kushikatsu in the sauce applies at every shop.

*Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi get extremely crowded at weekends, in the evening and during long holidays. When eating street food, good manners call for stopping in front of the shop or in an open space rather than eating as you walk.
