1. Osaka Castle｜The Golden-Shining Castle of the Ruler of the Realm

Osaka Castle, beautiful in its contrast of white and black, shows the expressions of the four seasons—cherry blossoms in spring, fall foliage in autumn. Shooting from a low angle looking up at the keep makes the contrast with the sky stand out, full of impact. The golden time right after sunrise gives a fantastical shot, with soft light hitting the stone walls. A reflection shot gently capturing it across the moat is also popular.

2. The Nakanoshima Retro Architecture Group｜European-Style Famous Buildings Lined Along the River

The Nakanoshima area, where Western buildings from the Meiji and Taisho eras—such as Osaka City Central Public Hall and the Bank of Japan Osaka Branch—line up along the river. The classical exterior of red brick and stone construction feels just like a trip to Europe! The buildings lit up at dusk and their reflection on the water surface are truly an extraordinary beauty. 3. Tondabayashi Jinaimachi｜An Old-House Town That Time-Slips to the Edo Period

The Jinaimachi (temple-town) of Tondabayashi, the only one within Osaka Prefecture selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The alleys lined with latticed windows, earthen walls, and tiled roofs are just like a period-drama set! A vertical composition making use of the alley's depth, and a crop with a close-up of the latticed windows, are ideal. The morning hours when there are few people and the light is soft are the time to aim for shooting.

4. Around the Yamaguchi House in Sakai｜Osaka's Oldest-Class Townhouses and Quiet Alleys

An old-house area of Important Cultural Properties remaining in Sakai, the hometown of Sen no Rikyu. The exterior, with renji-goshi (vertical lattice) neatly lined up, has a simple yet dignified beauty. Aiming for the patterns of light and shadow pouring through the lattice is recommended. Around 3–4 p.m., when autumn's slanting light pours in, gives the most dramatic light. A grown-up photogenic spot where history breathes within the stillness.

5. Around the Former Osaka Prefectural Minoo Park Insectarium in Minoo｜The Golden Combo of Fall Foliage × Retro Architecture

The retro Western-style building standing within green-rich Minoo Park is picturesque scenery where nature and architecture fuse. Especially during November's fall foliage season, photos with trees dyed red, orange, and yellow as a backdrop are just like a painting. The "picture-frame composition," treating the building as a frame and capturing the trees within it, is superbly Instagrammable

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: Osaka Castle is at its best during the cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and the autumn foliage season. Nakanoshima is best in the rose season in May and at dusk. The Jinaimachi district of Tondabayashi and the machiya townhouses of Sakai are best in the morning, when there are few people about. Minoo Park is recommended during the autumn foliage season in November.
• Opening hours and closing days: The Osaka Castle main tower is open 9:00-18:00 (last admission 17:30) and closed from December 28 to January 1. The Yamaguchi Residence, the Sakai City Machiya Historical Museum, is open 10:00-17:00 (last admission 16:30) and closed on Tuesdays (the following weekday when Tuesday is a public holiday) and over the New Year period. The Minoo Park Insect Museum is open 10:00-17:00 (last admission 16:30) and closed on Tuesdays (it opens on public holidays and closes the following weekday instead) and over the New Year period (December 29 to January 3). Osaka City Central Public Hall has its own closing days, so check the official website if you plan to look around inside.
• Admission: The Osaka Castle main tower costs 1,200 yen for adults / 600 yen for high school and university students (student ID required) / free of charge for junior high school students and younger. The Yamaguchi Residence costs 200 yen (free for junior high school students and younger, for Sakai City residents aged 65 and over, and for visitors with disabilities and their carers). The Minoo Park Insect Museum costs 280 yen for adults / free for junior high school students and younger. Strolling around the streets of Nakanoshima and the Jinaimachi district of Tondabayashi is free of charge.
• Access: Osaka Castle is 15 to 20 minutes' walk from Morinomiya, Tanimachi 4-chome or Temmabashi stations on the Osaka Metro. Nakanoshima is about 5 minutes' walk from Yodoyabashi Station. The Jinaimachi district of Tondabayashi is about 10 minutes' walk from Tondabayashi Station on the Kintetsu Nagano Line. The Yamaguchi Residence is about 3 minutes' walk from the Ayanocho stop on the Hankai tram line. The Minoo Park Insect Museum is about 15 minutes' walk from Hankyu Minoo Station.
• Parking: There is no parking lot at the Minoo Park Insect Museum or within Minoo Park. Please use the private parking lots nearby. For parking at the other spots, check the latest information on each official website.
• Photography rules: There are areas of the Osaka Castle main tower where photography is prohibited without permission, and the use of equipment that gets in the way of other visitors is also prohibited. The Osaka Branch of the Bank of Japan is a working financial institution, so limit yourself to photographing the exterior. The Jinaimachi district of Tondabayashi and the areas around the machiya of Sakai are residential neighborhoods where people still live. Do not enter private property, and take care not to capture residents or their laundry in your shots.
• Safety advice: The alleys of Jinaimachi and Sakai are narrow and cars use them too. Avoid taking photos in the middle of the road or setting up a tripod there. Both Osaka Castle Park and Nakanoshima have spots with few people around early in the morning and at night, so take care if you are on your own.
