What Is the Arakawa Line Kudari

Nagatoro's Arakawa Line Kudari is a signature river descent, riding an old-style wooden boat down the gorge of the clear Arakawa River. Skilled boatmen deftly handle their long poles, threading the boat between strange rocks and sheer cliffs. The upstream course, from near Oyahana Bridge to near the rock ledges, and the downstream course, from near the rock ledges to below Takasago Bridge, are each about 3 kilometers, and the full course linking both is about 6 kilometers. In calm stretches you can enjoy the scenery at leisure, and at the rapids you can savor the thrill while being splashed. This boat journey with its ebb and flow captivates visitors.

The Spectacular Rock Ledges

The landscape representative of Nagatoro Gorge is the "iwadatami" rock ledges, designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. This vast rock formation, carved out by the flow of the Arakawa River and resembling tatami mats laid out, spreads for about 800 meters. On the opposite bank rises a cliff called "Chichibu Sekiheki," and you can enjoy dynamic valley beauty. Geologically precious, Nagatoro is also called the "birthplace of Japanese geology." There are two ways to enjoy the rock ledges: viewing them from the boat, and walking on the rocks to see them up close.

Valley Beauty of the Four Seasons

Nagatoro shows beautiful gorge scenery through all four seasons. There is early summer when the fresh greenery is dazzling, autumn when foliage colors the rock walls, and in winter you can even enjoy the scenery while warming up on a "kotatsu boat." Access and Basic Information

Early summer with fresh greenery and autumn with foliage are especially beautiful and ideal for the Line Kudari. The reception is around "Nagatoro Station" on the Chichibu Railway, and a free shuttle bus runs to the boarding point for the upstream course. From the city center, head toward the Chichibu area by train. The Arakawa Line Kudari operates seasonally, typically from around early March to early December, and may be suspended due to weather, high water, or low water, so check the operating status in advance.

Practical Travel Notes

The most popular times are early summer with fresh greenery (May to June) and autumn with foliage (around November). One course (about 3 kilometers) takes about 15 to 20 minutes to descend depending on the water volume, so if you only do the descent you can enjoy it in a short time. Planning about half a day is easy, whether you do both the upstream and downstream courses, or combine one way with a walk on the rock ledges. Since the boat may get splashed, it is reassuring to wear clothes that can get wet or bring something to put on. Weekends, holidays, and the autumn foliage season are crowded, so an early-morning time slot is recommended.

A Word of Advice

Because the river descent is at the mercy of nature, it is suspended for safety during high water and similar conditions. Checking the operating status before your visit is reassuring. After viewing the rock ledges from the boat, walking on the rock ledges yourself to observe up close the unique landform carved out by the Arakawa River is also recommended. Combined with Nagatoro hot springs and local cuisine in the area, it makes a day to fully savor the valley beauty.

• There are several operators: Three companies run river-descent boats at Nagatoro, and each has a reception office near Nagatoro Station ("Nagatoro Line Kudari," "Nagatoro Funekudari" and "Arakawa Line Kudari"). The information below is for the "Nagatoro Line Kudari" operated by Chichibu Railway
• Operating season: March 10-December 4
• Operating hours: Around 9:00-16:00 (service ends as soon as the same-day tickets sell out). However, from March 10-15 and from November 24-December 4 the hours are 10:00-14:30
• Courses: Course A / Oyahana Bridge to Iwadatami (about 3 km); Course B / Iwadatami to Takasago Bridge (about 3 km); full course / Oyahana Bridge to Takasago Bridge (about 6 km in all). The full course is currently suspended, and visitors are directed to connect Courses A and B instead
• Time required: About 15-20 minutes when the water level is high
• Fares (as of February 2026): For both Course A and Course B, 2,000 yen for adults (junior high school students and above) (2,200 yen in peak periods) / 1,000 yen for children (aged 3 and over) (1,100 yen in peak periods). For groups of 15 or more, 1,800 yen for adults (2,000 yen in peak periods) / 900 yen for children (1,000 yen in peak periods). Peak periods include Golden Week, the summer holidays and the autumn foliage season, and can be checked on the fare calendar
• How to board: Reception is at the "Nagatoro Line Kudari Head Office," a 1-minute walk from Nagatoro Station. Boats depart as needed at intervals of 10-40 minutes, and parties of 14 or fewer need no reservation (buy your ticket at the counter on the day). Groups of 15 or more must book by two weeks before the desired date (bookings are not accepted in peak periods)
• Shuttle bus: For Course A there is a free shuttle from the head office to Oyahana Bridge, and for Course B from Takasago Bridge back to the head office
• Suspension of service: Operations may be suspended because of high or low water on the Arakawa River. When the water is low, the separate "Nagatoro Gorge Iwadatami Cruise" is operated

• Pokapoka Kotatsu Boat (winter only): Operating season January 1 to the end of February; reception hours 10:00-14:00. The boat takes about 20 minutes to cruise the calm stretch of water around Iwadatami. 1,100 yen for adults (junior high school students and above) / 700 yen for children (aged 3 and over). Reception is a 3-minute walk from Nagatoro Station (at Iwadatami) and no advance application is needed (as boats run as they fill up, there may be a wait of about 10-30 minutes)
• Iwadatami: A 5-minute walk from Nagatoro Station. On December 9, 1924 (Taisho 13) it was designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument as "Nagatoro" (Nagatoro Town and Minano Town), and it is known as the "birthplace of Japanese geology." On the opposite bank are the cliffs known as the Chichibu Red Wall and the Myojin Falls
• Parking: There is no free tourist parking at Nagatoro. If you come by car, the paid parking lots around Nagatoro Station are convenient
