Miso Potato

🏮 Saitama|July 1, 2026

Miso Potato

Handed down in the Chichibu region, miso potato is a local snack of bite sized potatoes fried and generously coated with a sweet and savory miso sauce. Born when potatoes grown in the mountain fields met the miso each household prepares, its simple, warm flavor has long been cherished. It is rooted in local life both as a light bite to fill a small hunger and as a treat to go with tea.

Highlights

Crisp outside and fluffy within, the fried potato takes on the rich, sweet miso sauce beautifully. The savor of the miso and the gentle sweetness of the potato combine into a moreish taste. The sweetness of the sauce and the type of miso differ by shop and home, giving each its own character.

Enjoying the Seasons

It can be enjoyed all year, but in the cold months the warmth of a fresh fried batch is especially welcome. It is a staple at festival and event stalls too, where people can be seen biting into a skewer between strolls.

Access and Basic Information

It is served at eateries, farm stands, and roadside stations around Seibu Chichibu Station. It is perfect to drop in for while walking the town or touring the shrines of Chichibu. Some shops even sell their handmade miso sauce.

A Quick Tip

The skewered, eat while walking style is easy and recommended. It stays tasty even cooled, but piping hot off the fryer is truly special.
