Adachi Museum of Art — Japan's Top Japanese Garden Recognized by the World

Adachi Museum of Art

For over two decades, the Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, has topped the rankings of Japan's most beautiful gardens as judged by the prestigious American journal "Journal of Japanese Gardening." The museum's founder, Adachi Zenko, believed that "the garden is a living Japanese painting," and every element of the 165,000-square-meter grounds is composed with the precision of a master artwork.

Highlights

The museum's gardens are divided into six distinct areas — including the celebrated "White Sand and Pine Garden" and the sweeping "Dry Landscape Garden" — each framed by interior windows and corridors designed so that visitors always view the garden as a living painting. No visitors are permitted to walk in the gardens themselves; they are experienced purely as visual art. The museum also houses a world-class collection of modern Japanese paintings, including major works by Yokoyama Taikan, that complement the garden experience. The sight of the Chugoku Mountains serving as "borrowed scenery" (shakkei) behind the raked gravel is simply breathtaking.

Getting There & Tips

- From Yasugi Station (JR San'in Main Line), a free shuttle bus runs to the museum in approximately 20 minutes. - Opening hours: 9:00–17:30 (9:00–18:00 April–September; 9:00–17:00 November–March). - Admission: Adults ¥2,300; check official website for current pricing. - Photography of the gardens is permitted from designated indoor viewpoints. - The museum café offers matcha and wagashi (traditional sweets) with garden views.

Best Time to Visit

All four seasons offer distinct beauty: spring brings fresh green moss and new foliage; summer deepens the greenery against clear blue skies; autumn turns the surrounding mountains gold and crimson; winter drapes the garden in snow, creating the museum's most iconic image — a snow-laden pine against a white sand landscape. Weekday mornings in autumn or winter are the least crowded.
