Rising by the Aka River in Daito, Unnan City, Ushio Onsen is a historic old spring whose name appears in the eighth century chronicle of the Izumo region. Though it sits in the hills far from the sea, its name, which suggests the tide, is said to come from a mythical legend told in that chronicle. A few inns stand quietly along the valley, and the simple spa mood, wrapped in the murmur of the river and the green of the hills, still welcomes travelers unchanged. At the public bath and the inns open air baths you can enjoy the water together with the valley scenery.

Highlights

The valley scenery of the Aka River that flows through the spa delights visitors through every season. The clear, gentle water blends easily into the skin and has long been favored as a healing bath. A noted spot with a towering katsura tree stands nearby, and many stop by while strolling. In a quiet setting away from the bustle, you can rest body and mind at ease.

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring, the fresh greenery and clear stream along the valley dazzle, and bath hopping in the crisp air is a pleasure. Summer brings the cool of the riverside, and fireflies dance in some years. Autumn colors the valley with foliage, and a bath while gazing at the tinted hills is a special treat. In winter, the snow dusted village and the water that warms you to the core feel truly precious.

Access and Basic Information

The onsen is in Nakayuishi, Daito, Unnan City. From Izumo Daito Station on the JR Kisuki Line it is about 7 minutes by Unnan community bus or about 10 minutes by taxi. It is easy to reach by car from central Matsue and Izumo, making it easy to drop by while touring the Oku Izumo area. The public bath and inns that accept day visitors let you casually enjoy this old valley spring.

A Quick Tip

Because the roads along the valley are narrow in places, drive with care. The area holds many sights of Oku Izumo, so pairing your visit with famous cherry blossom or autumn foliage spots makes for a rich trip. In this old spring of a land of myth, spend a relaxed time steeped in the flavor of history.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Water and temperature: The older source is a simple spring at about 42 degrees Celsius, while the newer source is a sodium sulfate and chloride spring at about 45.9 degrees. It is clear, colorless, and gentle on the skin.
  • Bathing: There is a public bath called Keiso, and the inns have open air baths where you can soak with the valley view. Day use availability varies by facility.
  • Access: About 7 minutes by Unnan community bus or 10 minutes by taxi from JR Izumo Daito Station on the Kisuki Line. From JR Nogi Station on the Sanin Main Line it is about 32 minutes by Unnan community bus.
  • Note: The valley roads are narrow in places, so drive with care. Confirm hours and closing days in advance.
