Northwest of central Matsue on the shore of Lake Shinji, Matsue Shinjiko Onsen is a lakeside spa known as one of Japan finest sunset spots. Though a relatively new spring that emerged in the twentieth century, it boasts abundant water and a high temperature, and its setting, where you can bathe while watching the sun sink into the lake, draws many travelers. With Matsue Castle and the moat boat cruise close at hand, it boasts outstanding convenience as a base for sightseeing.

Highlights

The greatest draw is the dramatic sunset over Lake Shinji. On a clear day the water turns crimson and the silhouette of Yomegashima islet emerges, a sight that takes the breath away. A walking path runs along the shore, and an evening stroll is popular. A free foot bath sits in front of Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway, so you can enjoy the water casually while waiting for a train. The abundant spring water is clear and colorless, gently soothing the fatigue of travel.

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring, lakeside cherry blossoms and the sunset perform together beautifully, drawing crowds of blossom viewers. Summer days are long, and waiting for the evening scene while catching the cool lake breeze after a bath is a pleasure. Autumn air is clear, making the sunset glow all the more vivid. In winter, steam rising in the cold and the sun sinking into the still water create a dreamlike atmosphere.

Access and Basic Information

The onsen lies on the shore of Lake Shinji around Chidori, Matsue City. It is right by Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway, and about 15 minutes by bus from JR Matsue Station. It is near Matsue Castle and sites linked to the writer Lafcadio Hearn, making it easy to combine with city sightseeing. Day use facilities are available, and many visitors time their visit to the sunset.

A Quick Tip

To enjoy the sunset, check the time of dusk in advance and enter the bath a little early. Because the view changes greatly with the weather, aiming for a clear day rewards you with a more beautiful evening scene. Enjoy a luxurious stay that pairs the bath, the sunset, and a walk through the castle town all at once.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Water and temperature: A sodium and calcium chloride and sulfate spring. The source runs hot at about 77 degrees Celsius, is clear and colorless, and the flow is abundant.
  • Foot bath: A free foot bath stands in front of Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway. Some lodgings also accept day bathers.
  • Access: Right by Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway, or about 15 minutes by local bus from JR Matsue Station. Matsue Castle and the moat cruise are easily reached on foot or by bus.
  • Note: The Lake Shinji sunset is the highlight, so check the sunset time and aim for a clear day. Look for the silhouette of Yomegashima islet in the evening scene.
