Bubbling up in the hills of Gotsu City, Arifuku Onsen is an old spring of the Iwami region said to hold more than a thousand years of history. Inns huddle together on the narrow valley floor, and stone stairways thread through the town in a distinctive townscape. There is nothing flashy about it, but centered on retro public baths where steam drifts upward, the quiet mood of a spa village still runs deep. Legends linking its founding to famous monks have been handed down, and locals have long cherished it as a place of healing.

Highlights

The public bath, a symbol of the town, has a charming retro exterior with a Western touch that begs to be photographed. Today three public baths named Gozenyu, Yayoiyu, and Satsukiyu each offer water with its own character. Strolling up and down the stone steps is a delight, as unexpected views open up at the end of the alleys. The clear, gentle simple spring water blends easily into the skin, and the lingering softness after a bath is widely praised.

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring, fresh mountain greenery brightens the valley, and a walk to the sound of birdsong is a pleasure. Summer offers the cool of the shade as cicadas ring through the spa town. Autumn deepens the colors of the surrounding foliage and sharpens the quiet mountain mood. In winter, the lingering snow on the stone steps makes the warming water feel all the more precious.

Access and Basic Information

The onsen sits in Arifuku, Gotsu City. It lies inland from JR Gotsu Station on the Sanin Main Line, about 35 minutes by community bus, or a little over 30 minutes by municipal bus from Hamada Station. It is close to the towns of Hamada and Gotsu, making it easy to drop by while touring the Iwami region. A public bath accepts day visitors, so you can enjoy this old spring casually.

A Quick Tip

Because the town has many stone steps, sturdy walking shoes are reassuring. Small cafes and souvenir shops are scattered along the slopes, so a stroll with rest stops is recommended. Leave the bustle behind and savor a slow soak in this quiet mountain hollow.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Water and temperature: A simple spring, with a source temperature said to be roughly 30 to 50 degrees Celsius. It is clear, colorless, and gentle on the skin.
  • Public baths: Three baths, Gozenyu, Yayoiyu, and Satsukiyu, welcome day visitors. Entry is typically a few hundred yen, and the retro Gozenyu is the landmark of the spa town.
  • Access: About 35 minutes by Gotsu community bus from JR Gotsu Station on the Sanin Main Line, or a little over 30 minutes by Hamada municipal bus from JR Hamada Station. Interchanges on the Iwami Expressway also give car access.
  • Note: This is a hilly town of stone steps, so comfortable shoes help. Hours and closing days differ by bathhouse, so check the latest details before visiting.
