Gotemba City lies between Hakone in Kanagawa and Mt. Fuji, a highland city spreading across the immediate southeastern foot of the mountain. With a location commanding close-up views of majestic Mt. Fuji, it is known as one of the starting points for climbing Mt. Fuji. From shopping at a vast outlet mall to refreshing highland outdoor activities, it is a popular destination offering varied ways to enjoy a visit.

Gotemba, Gateway to Mt. Fuji

Gotemba is a highland city on the immediate southeastern foot of Mt. Fuji. Majestic Mt. Fuji can be seen from many points across the city, a view unique to Gotemba. It is also the starting point of the Gotemba Route, one of the main climbing routes up Mt. Fuji. With a highland climate that stays relatively cool even in summer, it is enjoyed as a summer retreat.

Gotemba Premium Outlets

Gotemba signature attraction is Gotemba Premium Outlets, one of Japan largest outlet malls. Rows of famous domestic and international brand shops make it a shopping spot that thrills bargain hunters. On clear days, its open location lets you shop while viewing Mt. Fuji. Restaurants and food courts are well provided, so you can enjoy a full day here.

Highland Outdoors

Around Gotemba at the foot of Mt. Fuji, there are many outdoor spots to enjoy nature. Spacious parks, ranches, and campgrounds are scattered about, where you can relax while viewing Mt. Fuji. Horse riding and hands-on facilities are also popular with families. Highland leisure against the backdrop of majestic Mt. Fuji refreshes both mind and body.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Gotemba Premium Outlets is very large, so if you have a target brand, checking the floor map in advance makes touring efficient.
  • The outlet grounds include a day-use hot spring facility and a hotel, so you can combine shopping with a stay.
  • Mt. Fuji appears clearly on fine days with clean air. Highland weather changes easily, so a light layer is reassuring.
  • Roads, parking, and shuttle buses are crowded during sales and long holidays. Plan with time to spare.
  • Opening hours, fees, and shuttle bus times vary by facility. Check the official website before visiting.

Access and Basics

  • Location: Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
  • Train and bus: from the Hakone Otome exit of JR Gotemba Line Gotemba Station, a free shuttle bus reaches Gotemba Premium Outlets in about 15 minutes. Use local buses for nearby facilities such as Fuji Safari Park.
  • Car: about 10 minutes by car from Gotemba Interchange on the Tomei Expressway to Gotemba Premium Outlets. Parking is available at each facility.
  • From the Tokyo direction: routes include the JR Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Mishima, or local trains and highway buses to Gotemba. Check travel times and services on the official website.

One Piece of Advice

Gotemba is a convenient stopover for touring Hakone and Mt. Fuji and easy to drop by mid-trip. The outlet is relatively relaxed right after opening and on weekdays. Because the highland climate has large temperature swings by time of day and weather, having a layer to put on keeps you comfortable. To enjoy the view of Mt. Fuji, a clear morning is recommended.

๐Ÿ“š Sources

Business hours, fees, and shuttle bus times for each facility may change, so please check official sources before you set out.

Visitor Checklist

  • Estimated time: Half a day to a full day for the outlets and highland leisure
  • Access: About 15 minutes by free shuttle bus from JR Gotemba Station to the outlets
  • What to bring: A layer to put on, as highland weather changes easily
  • How to get around: Check the floor map in advance if you have a target brand
  • Seasonal notes: Mount Fuji is clearest on fine days with clear air
  • Good to check: Roads, parking, and shuttle buses are crowded during sales and holidays
