Atami Onsen

Inns and hotels climb the slopes overlooking Sagami Bay in this leading hot spring town in eastern Shizuoka. Though its waters carry more than fifteen centuries of history, Atami sits only about fifty minutes from Tokyo by bullet train, making it a beloved weekend escape. The sparkle of the sea, drifting steam, and fireworks launched throughout the year give the town a festive, resort atmosphere.

Highlights

Stroll the seaside promenade and Sun Beach to soak up the salty breeze and holiday mood. The giant camphor tree at Kinomiya Shrine is said to be over two thousand years old and draws many visitors as a spiritual site. Wandering the sloping lanes and pausing at a footbath on the way to your inn is a pleasure in itself.

Enjoying the Seasons

Atami is famous for its over-the-sea fireworks held across the calendar. Watching the sky and water glow at once is a signature local sight. Plum groves bloom from winter into early spring, while summer brings swimmers and marine sports to the shore.

Access and Basic Information

JR Atami Station is served by the Tokaido Shinkansen, about fifty minutes from Tokyo and easily reached from the Nagoya direction. The hot spring district spreads around the station, and you can reach major inns and sights on foot or by local bus. Day-use bathing facilities are scattered throughout.

A Quick Tip

Rooms fill quickly on fireworks nights, so book your lodging early. Choosing a sea-facing room may let you enjoy the display from your own window.
