Nikko Futarasan Shrine: The Sacred Mountain Shrine of Fate

Nikko Futarasan Jinja venerates the three Nikko mountains, Nantaisan, Nyohosan, and Tarosan, as divine bodies, with the matchmaking deity Onamuchi no Mikoto as its principal god. It stands at the heart of Nikko worship, which began in 767 when the monk Shodo Shonin enshrined the deity of Futarasan, and it is one of the oldest shrines in the Nikko sanctuary. It is an essential part of the World Heritage site Shrines and Temples of Nikko, registered in 1999.

Matchmaking Blessings

Onamuchi no Mikoto is revered as a deity who ties good bonds, said to grant many blessings related to human connections, including good matches, the gift of children, and safe childbirth. The grounds hold auspicious sacred trees such as the Married-Couple Cedar and the Parent-and-Child Cedar, and many visitors come seeking heart-shaped votive tablets and the colorful matchmaking charms.

Shinkyo Bridge and the Grounds

The Shinkyo Bridge, its vermilion form mirrored in the Daiyagawa River, is a landscape that symbolizes the gateway to Nikko and is counted among the three most unusual bridges of Japan. It is a graceful span about 28 meters long, 7.4 meters wide, and 10.6 meters high. Within the grounds the sacred spring Futara Reisen wells up, and there are many sights such as the Bakedoro lantern used for testing one fortune. Wrapped in solemn cedar groves, the precinct seems to cleanse the heart on its own.

Faith of the Deep Nikko

Futarasan Jinja forms a grand sphere of faith together with the Chugushi on the shore of Lake Chuzenji and the Okumiya on the summit of Nantaisan, which rises 2,486 meters. In summer the climb up Nantaisan is opened, and the mountain fills with pilgrims heading for the peak. Touring the deep Nikko area alongside Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji is also recommended.

Enjoying the Seasons

The fresh green of May and June and the autumn foliage from late October to early November are especially beautiful. The New Year visit and festival seasons are lively as well. The sanctuary sits at a high elevation and turns cold, so a jacket is reassuring.

Access and Basic Information

• The sanctuary sits high and stays cool mornings and evenings even in summer, and there is a fair amount of walking, so bring comfortable shoes and a layer
• To venture on to the deep Nikko area of Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and the Chugushi, allow for congestion on the Irohazaka slopes and set out early, especially in the foliage season
• Costs run to a few hundred yen for the main shrine and a few hundred to around a thousand yen for goshuin and charms; combined tickets for the two shrines and one temple are convenient
