Tochigi Prefecture, where rich nature and history live and breathe, is a little-known treasure trove of "photogenic gourmet"! From colorful sweets to eating-around gourmet you can enjoy together with spectacular views, we introduce 5 special picks that will make your Instagram gorgeous.

โ‘  Nikko Purin-tei | The Melt-in-Your-Mouth "Nikko Purin"

A popular shop nestled near the approach to Nikko Toshogu Shrine. The pudding served in glass jars glimmers like a jewel as the amber caramel catches and filters the light. Including the stone-paved path or cedar-lined avenue in the background creates a shot with a Japanese-modern feel that truly embodies historic Nikko.

๐Ÿ“ธ Photography tip Morning hours with soft natural light are ideal. Tilting the jar to a 45-degree angle beautifully captures the luminous glow through the glass.

๐Ÿšƒ Access About 15 minutes on foot from Tobu Nikko Line "Tobu-Nikko Station"

โ‘ก Utsunomiya Gyoza Tasting | Kirasse Main Store

A permanent shop operated by the Utsunomiya Gyoza Association. Pan-fried, deep-fried, and boiled gyoza are arranged together on a single plate โ€” photographing them with steam rising gives a lively, in-the-moment feel. A classic alternative is to line up multiple plates and shoot from directly above.

๐Ÿ“ธ Photography tip The lighting at the table is subdued, so raise the exposure slightly. Keep the lens aimed only at your own table to avoid capturing other customers or staff.

๐Ÿšƒ Access B1F, MEGA Don Quijote LaPark Utsunomiya, 2-3-12 Babadori, Utsunomiya. Open weekdays 11:00โ€“20:30 (L.O. 20:00), weekends and holidays 11:00โ€“21:00 (L.O. 20:30), open year-round.

โ‘ข Nikko Yuba Souvenir "Yuba Chips"

Nikko's delicate specialty yuba (tofu skin), sliced thin and crisply fried. The translucent golden chips sparkle as they catch the light, and the washi-style packaging adds to the overall photogenic appeal. Arrange them on a plate after opening and you have an instant cafรฉ-style shot!

๐Ÿ“ธ Photography tip Placing them on a wooden tray or fabric with a Japanese pattern and shooting from directly above (flat lay) is hugely popular. Visit during the autumn foliage season and the surrounding scenery becomes the perfect backdrop

๐Ÿšƒ Access Available at souvenir shops around Tobu Nikko Station and throughout Nikko City. Availability varies by store.

โ‘ฃ Strawberries from the Strawberry Kingdom | "Tochiotome" and "Tochiaika"

Tochigi Prefecture ranks first in Japan for strawberry production. According to the prefecture's own data, it has held the top spot for 57 consecutive years from the 1968 to 2024 harvests, with the 2024 harvest reaching 25,700 tonnes. Planted acreage has also ranked first nationwide for 24 consecutive years since the 2001 harvest. Thanks to its proximity to the Tokyo metropolitan area and its abundant winter sunshine, the prefecture proudly calls itself the "Strawberry Kingdom."

The two flagship varieties are "Tochiotome," known for its large size and rich sweetness, and the newer "Tochiaika," which has a heart-shaped cross-section and a milder tartness. From winter through spring, packs of vivid red berries pile high at roadside farm stands across the prefecture, and a single berry perched atop a white shortcake or parfait is enough to steal the whole photo. The sweet fragrance that greets you when you open a greenhouse door is an experience unique to the growing region.

๐Ÿ“ธ Photography tip Red tones are prone to overexposure, so dial down your exposure slightly. The color deepens and the tiny seeds on the surface come through with satisfying texture. Inside a strawberry-picking greenhouse, shooting slightly into the light (backlit) makes the berries look wonderfully juicy. For "Tochiaika," cut one in half lengthwise to reveal the heart-shaped cross-section โ€” a shot that instantly says "Tochigi."

๐Ÿšƒ Access Strawberry-picking farms are scattered across the prefecture in Moka, Tochigi, Kanuma, Nikko, and other cities. Opening dates, reservation methods, and fees vary by farm, so check each farm's official information in advance.

โ‘ค The Yellow Local Drink "Kanto Tochigi Lemon"

Affectionately known as "lemon milk," this drink has long been loved by the people of Tochigi. According to the manufacturer Tochigi Dairy, it was originally sold shortly after World War II by Kanto Milk in Utsunomiya under the name "Kanto Lemon Milk," with lemon chosen as one of the fruit-flavored milks fashionable at the time. It became a popular product at schools and events, but in 2004 Kanto Milk went out of business. The following year, Tochigi Dairy took over the recipe and revived it as "Kanto Tochigi Lemon."

Because a product must be 100% raw milk to be labeled "milk," the official product name contains no such word. It also contains no actual lemon juice โ€” it is a "lemon-colored dairy drink" made by adding sugar and lemon flavoring to Tochigi-produced raw milk. Its appeal lies in the gentle richness of milk layered with a faintly sweet-and-tart aroma, giving it a simple, nostalgic flavor.

๐Ÿ“ธ Photography tip Its greatest asset is its pastel yellow hue, unlike any other drink. Place it against a background with few colors โ€” a white wall or wooden table โ€” and the color itself becomes the subject. A popular shot involves holding the bottle or carton up against a blue sky or cityscape background. Lining up derivative lemon-milk-flavored products like soft serve or baked sweets creates a unified, all-yellow composition.

๐Ÿšƒ Access Sold at supermarkets, roadside stations, and souvenir shops across the prefecture. Availability varies by store.

Shared Tips for Getting the Perfect Shot

  • Choose your light: Soft natural light in the morning brings out the truest colors in sweets and drinks. If a window seat is available, take it without hesitation.
  • Simplify the background: Just clearing away paper napkins and bags makes a huge difference. The wood grain of a table or a washi-paper mat is already a great backdrop on its own.
  • Shoot hot food first: Steam is the star for gyoza and freshly grilled mochi skewers. Press the shutter as soon as you sit down, then enjoy the food while it's still at its best.
  • Be considerate of people and shops: Flash flattens the texture of food and disturbs those around you. Keep it off as a rule, and choose an angle where other customers and staff are out of frame.

Tochigi's Instagram-worthy food is beautiful to look at and delicious to eat. On your next trip, grab your camera and enjoy every bit of what Tochigi has to offer

Practical Information for Your Visit

  • Opening hours / closed days: The Kirasse main branch is open 11:00-20:30 on weekdays (last order 20:00) and 11:00-21:00 on weekends and public holidays (last order 20:30), open all year round. Nikko Purin-tei and the souvenir shops in Nikko City each have their own opening hours and closing days.
  • Budget and price guide: At Kirasse you can order gyoza by the plate, so you can compare dumplings from several restaurants. Nikko purin (pudding) and yuba chips are sold by the piece or by the bag.
  • Access: The Kirasse main branch is on the first basement floor of "MEGA Don Quijote LaPark Utsunomiya" at 2-3-12 Baba-dori, Utsunomiya City. The Nikko area is reached from Tobu Nikko Station on the Tobu Nikko Line, and local buses run toward Toshogu Shrine.
  • Parking: For the Kirasse main branch, use the commercial complex's car park. In Nikko's temple-gate district the car parks fill up easily during the tourist season, so public transport is the safer choice.
  • Photography rules: In food courts and restaurants, photograph only what is on your own table and make sure other customers, staff and the kitchen are not caught in the frame. Some souvenir shops do not allow photography of their product shelves without permission, so always check with the staff. Avoid using a tripod in the aisles.
  • Points to note: The Nikko Sannai area contains World Heritage shrines and temples, and photography is prohibited inside some halls and of certain treasures. Please follow the posted signs.

* Opening hours and menus are subject to change. Please check each establishment's official information before your visit.
