1. Nikko Toshogu (Nikko City)

3. Ohirasan Shrine (Tochigi City)

The approach where about 1,000 stone steps continue is like a road leading to the heavens. The row of cherry trees coloring both sides is one of the prefecture's finest famous spots, and in spring a tunnel of pale pink appears. The contrast of stone steps and cherry blossoms is the strongest composition that can express "Japan's spring" in a single shot.

4. Banna-ji Temple (Ashikaga City)

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening / worship hours and closed days: Nikko Toshogu Shrine is open 9:00-17:00 from April 1 to October 31 and 9:00-16:00 from November 1 to March 31 (reception closes 30 minutes before closing time) / At Ohirasan Shrine the amulet office and prayer reception are open 9:00-16:30 / The car park at Karasawayama Shrine may be used until 18:00
• Admission: A single admission ticket for Nikko Toshogu Shrine costs 1,600 yen for adults and high school students and 550 yen for elementary and junior high school students (the combined Toshogu + Treasure Museum ticket is 2,400 yen for adults and high school students and 870 yen for elementary and junior high school students) / Entry to the precincts of Ohirasan Shrine, Bannaji Temple and Karasawayama Shrine is free of charge (some halls and treasures charge separately)
• Access: Nikko Toshogu Shrine and Nikko Futarasan Shrine = bus from Tobu Nikko Station on the Tobu Nikko Line / Ohirasan Shrine = about 15-20 minutes on the Kanto Bus Kokugakuin line from Tochigi Station (JR / Tobu), get off at "Kokugakuin," then climb the roughly 1,000 stone steps (the Ajisai-zaka hydrangea slope) / Bannaji Temple = about a 10-minute walk from Ashikaga Station on the JR Ryomo Line / Karasawayama Shrine = about 10 minutes by car (about 3.5 km) from Tanuma Station on the Tobu Sano Line
• Parking: Karasawayama Shrine has a free car park near the summit of Mount Karasawa (usable until 18:00)
• Etiquette for worship: All of these are active places of faith. Keep quiet in front of the halls and avoid walking down the centre of the approach path. There are many cats in the grounds of Karasawayama Shrine, but please do not feed them or pick them up against their will
• Photography rules: Photography is prohibited inside some halls at Nikko Toshogu Shrine, such as the Yakushido hall with its "Crying Dragon." Please follow the signs. Avoid using tripods or holding a spot for long periods on the approach paths, and check with each shrine or temple in advance for commercial photography
• Safety notes: The main approach to Ohirasan Shrine consists of about 1,000 stone steps. They are slippery in wet weather, so take particular care on the way down. Karasawayama Shrine stands on the site of a mountain castle; do not go near the stone walls or off the marked paths, as there is a risk of falling

* The highlight of Ohirasan Shrine's stone stairway, "Ajisai-zaka," is its roughly 2,500 hydrangea plants (late June to mid-July), while the cherry blossoms are famous throughout the Mount Ohira area.
