Edo Period Scrolls Come to Life

The "Hyakumonozoroi Sennin Musha Gyoretsu" (Procession of a Thousand Warriors) is held at Nikko Toshogu's Grand Spring Festival (May) and Grand Autumn Festival (October). It recreates the procession that accompanied the reburial of Tokugawa Ieyasu's remains from Kunozan to Nikko, and a column of more than a thousand people — armoured warriors, flag-bearers, shrine priests and attendants — parades valiantly along the main approach. The vividly coloured costumes and the solemn formation make it a picture scroll of a bygone age come to life.

Yabusame and Martial Arts Demonstrations

Yabusame (mounted archery) is dedicated during the grand festival. The sight of warriors shooting three targets one after another from a galloping horse is thrilling, and a great cheer rises from the crowd each time a target splits. The sound of hooves and the tension of a bow drawn to its limit create a taut atmosphere within the shrine grounds.

Experience at a World Heritage Site

Unfolding against the backdrop of the magnificent World Heritage shrine buildings, beginning with the Yomeimon Gate, the procession lets you feel the very essence of Japanese history and traditional craftsmanship. Advancing along the sacred cedar-lined approach, it draws visitors back into the Edo period. Planning ahead is important due to crowds.

Combine Your Visit

Before or after the grand festival, it is also recommended to take your time viewing the "Shrines and Temples of Nikko" — the Yomeimon Gate, the Three Wise Monkeys and Sleeping Cat carvings, and the neighbouring Futarasan Shrine and Rinnoji Temple. Go a little further and you can enjoy the scenery of inner Nikko, such as Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji.

Best Season

The Grand Spring Festival is usually held on May 17-18 and the Grand Autumn Festival on October 16-17. They can be enjoyed together with the fresh green of spring or the autumn colours. Dates can change from year to year, so check official information.

Access

About 10 minutes by bus from JR or Tobu "Nikko Station," getting off at "Omotesando," which is right there. The days of the grand festival are extremely crowded, so arriving early is recommended.

• Dates: The Grand Spring Festival is fixed on May 17 and 18 every year, and the Grand Autumn Festival on October 16 and 17. In 2026 the spring festival falls on Sunday May 17 and Monday May 18, and the autumn festival on Friday October 16 and Saturday October 17
• Spring timetable: May 17, 10:00 Reisai main rite (at the main shrine; not open to general worshippers) → 13:00 Bow-and-arrow handover ceremony and purification rite in front of the five-storey pagoda → 13:15 Entry into the temporary riding ground on the main approach → from about 13:30, roughly one hour of dedicated ritual yabusame → evening, Yoinari-sai (at Futarasan Shrine). • Scale of the procession: Centred on the portable shrines, 53 categories of participants including armoured warriors, and more than 1,200 people
• Venue: Nikko Toshogu (2301 Sannai, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture). Yabusame takes place on a temporary riding ground on the main approach (before the stone torii), and the warrior procession follows the route from the main hall of Futarasan Shrine → in front of the Toshogu front gate → the Otabisho → the Toshogu main hall
• Nearest station: From "Nikko" Station on the JR Nikko Line or "Tobu Nikko" Station on the Tobu Nikko Line, about 7 minutes on the World Heritage Sightseeing Bus, getting off at the "Shinkyo" stop, then about a 15-minute walk. Asakusa to Tobu Nikko takes about 1 hour 50 minutes on the Kegon limited express, or about 2 hours 5 minutes by rapid service. Shinjuku to Tobu Nikko takes about 2 hours on the JR Nikko limited express, and Utsunomiya to Nikko about 45 minutes on the JR Nikko Line
• Parking: Toshogu Main Car Park (open year-round) = 200 spaces for ordinary cars. Fees are per vehicle per entry per day: 600 yen for ordinary cars, 1,200 yen for microbuses, 2,000 yen for large buses. Numbers of microbuses and large buses are limited and reservations are required at least seven days in advance (0288-54-0560). It is 2 km, about 10 minutes, from the Nikko IC
• Viewing: According to Nikko City's official tourism website, viewing is free. However, separately from watching the rites, an admission fee for the shrine precincts applies — Toshogu-only ticket: 1,600 yen for adults and high school students (1,440 yen for groups of 35 or more) / 550 yen for elementary and junior high school students (495 yen for groups); Toshogu plus Treasure Hall set: 2,400 yen for adults, 870 yen for elementary and junior high school students; Treasure Hall: 1,000 yen for adults, 400 yen for elementary and junior high school students; Art Museum: 800 yen for adults, 400 yen for elementary and junior high school students. The precinct audio guide is 500 yen per day (Japanese, English, Chinese)
• Opening hours: April 1 to October 31, 9:00-17:00; November 1 to March 31, 9:00-16:00 (reception until 30 minutes before closing)
• Official notes: Viewing is free, but visitors are asked to watch with due solemnity. Flash photography and the like at the yabusame is dangerous because it startles the horses and visitors are asked to refrain from it. Surrounding roads and car parks may become congested
