Otsuka Museum of Art โ Experience 1,000 World Masterpieces at Full Scale
Otsuka Museum of Art
The Otsuka Museum of Art on Naruto Island, Tokushima Prefecture, is arguably the most extraordinary museum experience in Japan โ a vast underground complex housing full-scale ceramic reproductions of approximately 1,000 Western masterpieces, from ancient Greek frescoes to the Sistine Chapel ceiling to Picasso's Guernica, all recreated at their original sizes using a special ceramic plate technique that promises they will last over 2,000 years.
Highlights
The sheer ambition of the museum is staggering: the total floor area of approximately 29,000 square meters makes it the largest museum by floor space in Japan. Walking through the galleries is like traveling through the entire history of Western art in a single afternoon โ the Brancacci Chapel, the Scrovegni Chapel, Vermeer's complete oeuvre, all the great Impressionist masterpieces โ each recreated at full scale so you can walk right up to the brushstrokes. Because they are reproductions, photography is freely permitted throughout, allowing visitors to document their encounter with each work. The rooftop garden, modeled on Monet's garden at Giverny with a full-scale reproduction of his Water Lilies in the surrounding pond, is one of the most magical spaces in Japan.
