Hamamura Onsen

In Ketaka, part of Tottori City, near the Sea of Japan, Hamamura Onsen is a seaside spa said to hold more than five centuries of history. Known as the birthplace of the folk song Kaigara-bushi, it greets visitors with a shell-motif statue in front of the station. Combining abundant hot water with a coastal location, it is a simple and welcoming spa where you can swim in summer and enjoy seafood year-round.

Highlights

Hamamura beach spreads just beside the spa town and bustles with swimmers in summer. The local Kaigara-bushi is an unpretentious folk song that once brightened the toil of scallop fishing, and it is still performed at some inns today. Public bathhouses and foot baths make it easy to combine a shoreline walk with a soak.

Enjoying the Seasons

Summer offers the finest pairing of sea bathing and cooling off on the beach after a soak. From autumn into winter, Sea of Japan delicacies such as snow crab grace the table. Spring brings pleasant walks along the calm shore, and through every season, having both the sea and the waters close at hand is this spa's defining charm.

Access and Basic Information

Its outstanding access, within walking distance of JR Hamamura Station, makes it easy to drop by on a rail journey. The public bathhouses and foot baths welcome day visitors, so you can enjoy the waters even without staying overnight. It is close to the Tottori Sand Dunes direction, fitting neatly into a trip along the San'in coast.

A Quick Tip

Since it is a short walk from the station, this spa is easy to reach even without a car. If you pair a summer visit with sea bathing, bringing extra towels and a change of clothes will keep you comfortable. During crab season, staying overnight for the seafood is well worth it.
