Tottori Onsen is a rare downtown hot spring, welling up in the city center of Tottori City, the prefectural capital. Its full-fledged opening is traced to 1904, when a high-temperature source was struck, and with an outstanding location about a five-minute walk from JR Tottori Station, it boasts abundant hot water. Thanks to its convenience for dropping by between shopping, meals, and sightseeing, it also serves well as a base for exploring attractions such as the Tottori Sand Dunes.

Highlights

Its greatest appeal is enjoying a genuine hot spring right in the middle of a lively district, where more than thirty sources have been developed nearby. The ease of soaking casually even in the midst of work or travel is unique to this spa. Springs welling up within a city are rare in Japan, placing Tottori among a small group alongside cities such as Kofu and Matsuyama. Restaurants and shops gather nearby, adding the pleasure of tasting local cuisine after a bath.

Enjoying the Seasons

The nearby Tottori Sand Dunes show different faces by season, from the summer seaside to the clear air of autumn and winter and the snow-dusted dunes. Being able to return to town and soothe a body tired from walking the dunes right away is a great advantage. In winter, San'in delicacies such as snow crab come into season, to be savored to the fullest at a downtown inn.

Access and Basic Information

At about a five-minute walk from JR Tottori Station, its ease of access by public transport is among the best in the prefecture. The waters are a sulfate spring (sodium sulfate-chloride) with a source temperature said to be about 48 degrees Celsius. It is convenient for an overnight stay as a base for the sand dunes and city sightseeing, and there are day-use bathing facilities as well. With restaurants and shops close at hand, you can get by comfortably even without a car, and day-use fees vary by facility.

Practical Travel Notes

Staying here as a travel base lets you tour the dunes and city sights efficiently. The Tottori Sand Dunes are close, about twenty minutes by bus or car from the city, so a downtown spa makes it easy to build an itinerary that soothes fatigue in the waters before or after a dune walk. The standard plan is a single overnight as a base, enjoying a soak on the night you arrive and the morning before you leave. The best seasons are winter, when snow crab is at its peak, and autumn, when the dune scenery is beautiful. Budget a few hundred to just over a thousand yen for a day-use bath; overnight rates vary by menu.

A Quick Tip

Staying here as a travel base lets you tour the dunes and city sights efficiently. Making the most of the easy convenience of a downtown spa, soaking on the night you arrive or the morning before you leave is a fine way to reset the fatigue of the trip. Being close to the station, you can also leave your luggage at the inn and head out sightseeing unencumbered.
