Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route — A Great 3,000m Mountain Traverse

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is Japan's most spectacular mountain crossing, a 37-kilometer traverse through the heart of the Northern Alps connecting Toyama Prefecture with Nagano Prefecture via seven different modes of transport. Passing through peaks above 3,000 meters, the route offers landscapes ranging from volcanic moonscapes to alpine meadows, all accessible without specialist climbing skills.

Highlights

The journey begins in Toyama at Tateyama Station, ascending by cable car to Bijodaira, then continuing by highland bus through alpine forest to Murodo at 2,450 meters. Murodo is the route's dramatic centerpiece: surrounded by the Tateyama massif, Jigokudani volcanic valley, and several pristine alpine ponds, it offers walks and vistas of extraordinary power. From here, a trolley bus and ropeway descend dramatically toward Kurobe Dam.

Kurobe Dam itself is a engineering achievement of the highest order — Japan's largest arch dam, 186 meters tall, holding back the turquoise waters of Lake Kurobe in a setting of improbable alpine grandeur. The view from the dam's promenade across the reservoir to the encircling peaks is simply breathtaking. In summer, the dam's discharge creates an enormous plume of white water visible from great distances.

The complete traverse from Toyama to Ogizawa in Nagano takes approximately six hours and involves cable cars, rope-ways, trolley buses, and highland coaches — each transition revealing entirely new landscapes.

Getting There & Tips

Book complete traverse tickets well in advance through the official Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route website. The route operates from mid-April to late November. All luggage can be forwarded by courier between the two ends. Dress in layers — summit temperatures can be 20°C below valley levels.

Mid-April to late May for snow corridor. Late September to mid-October for alpine foliage in brilliant gold and red.
