Unazuki Onsen
Spread across a river terrace at the mouth of the Kurobe Gorge, Unazuki Onsen opened in 1923 and is the largest hot spring town in Toyama Prefecture. Its colorless, transparent water is piped in from Kuronagi roughly seven kilometers away, and its gentle touch soothes the fatigue of a day exploring the gorge.
Highlights
A fountain in the center of the town spouts genuine hot spring water that is even safe to drink. The starting station of the Kurobe Gorge Railway sits right beside the resort, so bathers often move straight from the baths to the sightseeing trolley. The autumn foliage on the surrounding slopes and the dam lake views are superb.
Enjoying the Seasons
Fresh green in spring, cool ravine breezes in summer, blazing foliage in autumn, and snow-viewing open-air baths in winter give the resort a different face year round. Autumn is especially popular, when the whole gorge turns to color.
Access and Basic Information
The nearest station is Unazuki Onsen on the Toyama Chiho Railway, close to Kurobe Unazuki Onsen Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, making access from the Tokyo area convenient. Inns range from large to small, and day-use bathing facilities are available too.
A Quick Tip
If you plan to ride the trolley, arriving in the morning works best. During the busy autumn foliage season, book your lodging well in advance for peace of mind.
