Mikurigaike Onsen
Springing on the Murodo plateau of Tateyama at about 2,400 meters, Mikurigaike Onsen is known as the highest-elevation hot spring inn in Japan. Its cloudy sulfur water, drawn from Jigokudani, and the sweeping view of the great Tateyama peaks before it blow away the fatigue of climbers.
Highlights
The clear blue Mikurigaike pond spreads just beside the inn, and the sight of the Tateyama range mirrored on its surface is a spectacle in itself. From the bath you can savor the crisp alpine air and the ridgelines, and at night a sky full of stars awaits. The milky-white water settles gently on the skin.
Enjoying the Seasons
From early summer after the snowmelt, alpine flowers bloom in profusion, and in autumn the grassy slopes turn to russet color. The inn operates from spring, while snow lingers, through autumn, closing in winter, so confirm the timing of your visit.
Access and Basic Information
Ascend to Murodo via the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, then walk about fifteen minutes along the footpath. Both overnight stays and day-use bathing are possible, and it is cherished as a base for alpine hiking.
A Quick Tip
At this high elevation the weather changes quickly, so warm clothing and sturdy shoes are essential. Plan around the operating hours of the Alpine Route.
