At the western edge of Wakayama City, on the cape of Kada facing the Kitan Strait, Awashima Onsen is a seaside hot spring known for the silhouettes of islands in the strait and the beauty of its sunsets. A venerable shrine that has drawn worshippers since ancient times lies nearby, lending the area a distinctive atmosphere. Bathing while gazing at the sea, wrapped in the scent of the tide, offers a relaxed time hard to imagine so near a city.

Highlights

The view from the baths overlooking the strait is a sight unique to this hot spring. Islands including Tomogashima dot the waters before you, and the sunset sinking toward the horizon dyes sky and sea in shades of crimson so beautifully that you find yourself entranced. Nearby stands Awashima Shrine, famed for its doll memorials, where great numbers of dolls offered from across the country line the grounds. Along with bathing you can enjoy a journey touching a distinctive culture.

Enjoying the Seasons

Summer is a pleasant season to feel the cool seaside breeze and gaze at the strait after a bath. From autumn into winter the air grows clear and the beauty of the sunset stands out all the more. In spring, under mild sunshine, it is a delight to stroll around the cape while enjoying the sea view and the waters.

Access and Basic Information

From the center of Wakayama City, transfer to the Nankai Kada Line and get off at Kada Station to head for the seaside hot spring. Kada is a scenic spot celebrated as far back as the Manyoshu poetry anthology, and many inns serve the bounty of the sea, so the appeal is enjoying both the waters and fine flavors. Day-use bathing with the view is possible too, making it well suited for a casual short trip.

Practical Travel Notes

Besides doll memorials, Awashima Shrine is known for needle memorials and doll-floating rites, and it is one of the highlights of a Kada stroll. The shrine and shore are within walking distance of Kada Station, but wearing comfortable shoes with the slopes and distance in mind brings peace of mind. If the sunset is your goal, look up the seasonal time of nightfall and head for a spot with a sea view a little early to enjoy the scene with room to spare. Whether day-use bathing is offered, along with fees and hours, differs by inn, so checking in advance is recommended.

A Quick Tip

Sunset is an especially beautiful time, so visiting to match the hour of the setting sun lets you meet a striking scene. The shore can be windy on some days, so bringing something to slip on will keep you at ease. If you come for the seafood, aiming for a time when the seasonal catch is in makes for a more satisfying visit.
