Springing up along a clear stream that flows through the mountains of Kumano, Kawayu Onsen is known for the rare quality of hot water rising straight from the riverbed. The experience of digging up the river stones to instantly create your own private bath is hard to find anywhere else. Rustic bathing to the sound of the babbling current is the true delight of this place.

Highlights

Above all, the greatest attraction here is being able to dig your own bath in the riverbank by hand. Mixing the cold river water with the welling hot water to adjust the temperature to your liking is itself an enjoyable task. Time spent gazing at the clear river surface and the ranges of mountains gives a soothing sense of becoming one with nature.

Enjoying the Seasons

In the depths of cold winter, a large open-air bath made by damming part of the river, called the Senninburo, becomes the local specialty and draws many visitors. The Senninburo is a large open-air bath that appears roughly through the winter, made by mixing the clear water of the Otonogawa with hot water welling up from the riverbed and adjusting it to a comfortable temperature. In summer you can enjoy the waters alongside river play, savoring the luxury of moving between cool and warm. In the seasons of fresh green and autumn color, the hues of the mountains reflected on the water delight the eye.

Access and Basic Information

One of the Kumano Hongu hot spring villages, it lies in the Hongu district of Tanabe City. From the nearest railway station, a bus heads into the mountains to reach this riverside hot spring near the sacred sites of Kumano. Nearby springs such as Yunomine and Watarase are scattered close by, making it a convenient base for bath-hopping. Inns line the river, and many rooms look out over the clear stream.

Practical Travel Notes

The Senninburo appears for a limited winter period and is enjoyed as a mixed-gender open-air bath that requires a swimsuit. It may be closed on days when the river runs high, so checking whether it is running before you visit brings peace of mind. To enjoy digging your own riverbank bath, having a swimsuit, clothes you do not mind getting wet, a change of clothing, and a towel keeps things comfortable. Footing grows dark at night, so bringing a light lets you walk the riverbank safely.

A Quick Tip

To enjoy the riverbank baths, bringing clothes you do not mind getting wet and a change of clothing keeps things comfortable. The winter Senninburo is offered only for a limited period, so it is wise to check the dates before visiting. When mixing river water and the source spring to adjust the temperature, take great care not to touch the hot water directly.
