Yunomine Onsen

🌊 Wakayama|July 1, 2026

Yunomine Onsen

Welling up deep in the mountains of Kumano, Yunomine Onsen is a venerable hot spring said to be one of the oldest in Japan. It has long been known as a place where pilgrims to Kumano purified themselves of the dust of travel, and steam still drifts along the river today. It is wrapped in a distinctive, tranquil air where faith and bathing cures come together.

Highlights

The natural hot water bubbling up among small rocks by the river is a sight unique to this place. A famous spring said to shift in color through the day draws visitors, and the sight of people waiting their turn for a tiny bath that holds only a few is part of this hot springs character. The rows of inns lining the narrow lanes preserve a strong sense of times past.

Enjoying the Seasons

In the season of fresh greenery the mountains glow with life, and a bath after walking the pilgrimage road feels especially soothing. In autumn the surrounding trees take on color, and steam mingling with the foliage creates a scene full of atmosphere. In winter, giving yourself over to the warm water amid the mountain silence is a special pleasure.

Access and Basic Information

From the nearest railway station a bus winds into the mountains, reaching a valley close to one of Kumanos central sacred sites. The area lies along World Heritage pilgrimage routes, and many stop by in the midst of a walking journey. Simple inns predominate, carrying the spirit of bathing cures into the present.

A Quick Tip

The small bath holds only a limited number of people, so visiting outside busy hours lets you relax. Mountain weather changes easily, so having something to slip on will keep you at ease.
