Set near the center of the Kii Peninsula and cradled by deep mountains and a gorge, Ryujin Onsen has long been counted among Japans three beauty springs for its reputation of leaving skin smooth. The silky water seems to wrap the body more softly the longer you soak, and many have been charmed by its comfort. The quiet of a deep mountain village heightens the appeal of the waters all the more.

Highlights

The gentle spring welling up along the gorge is this hot springs greatest attraction. Soaking while listening to the murmur of the clear stream, you feel the smooth water softly caress the skin. A sodium bicarbonate spring reputed to leave skin soft and smooth, it has been counted among Japans three beauty springs alongside Yunokawa in Shimane and Kawanaka in Gunma. The deep green of the mountains encircling the area is beautiful too, and the charm of this place is spending time close to the changing of the four seasons.

Enjoying the Seasons

In the season of fresh greenery the gorge turns a vivid green, and a stroll after bathing feels all the more pleasant. In autumn the surrounding mountains take on brilliant color, and the scene woven by foliage and stream soothes the heart. In winter the land may don a coat of snow, and giving yourself to the warm water amid the silence is a special pleasure.

Access and Basic Information

It lies in the Ryujin village of Tanabe City, a mountain hot spring set between the sacred land of Kumano and Mount Koya. As mountain roads continue on, it is convenient to travel by car along the road that follows the gorge. At the public bathhouse known as Motoyu you can enjoy free-flowing source water on a day visit, and with a road leading up to the highlands passing nearby, many visit as part of a drive. The inns are scattered along the gorge, and some offer rooms with views of the clear stream or the mountain ranges.

Practical Travel Notes

The Motoyu public bathhouse offers day-use bathing and generally opens from morning into the evening, but there is a final reception time, so heading over with room to spare is reassuring for a drop-in. Being in the mountains, public transport is limited, and travel times can shift with the season and road conditions. The highland road linking Mount Koya and Ryujin offers fine views, but in winter take care with the cold and possible traffic restrictions. To savor the smooth water to your heart is content, alternating between cooler and hotter baths while soaking slowly is recommended.

A Quick Tip

To fully savor the smooth water, soaking slowly in a cooler bath is recommended. The mountain roads can turn cold in winter, so dressing warmly for your visit brings peace of mind. If driving, some stretches of road along the way are narrow and winding, so drive with time to spare.
