Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening and visiting hours / closed days: Kumano Nachi Taisha has set reception hours for prayer rituals, formal worship and the amulet office. Please also check the latest information on the official website regarding the waterfall viewing area of Hiro Shrine (Nachi Falls).
• Admission: Visiting the precincts of Kumano Nachi Taisha is free of charge. A separate admission fee may be required for the viewing platform of Hiro Shrine, which takes you close to the falls, and for the three-storied pagoda of the neighboring Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple.
• Access: Kumano Nachi Taisha is at 1 Nachisan, Nachikatsuura-cho, Higashimuro-gun, Wakayama Prefecture (TEL 0735-55-0321). From Kii-Katsuura Station on the JR Kisei Main Line, take the Kumano Gobo Nankai Bus about 30 minutes to the "Nachisan" bus stop, or about 20 minutes by taxi.
• Parking: The shrine parking lot at Kumano Nachi Taisha has 30 spaces. Using it requires a toll of 800 yen for the shrine's disaster-prevention road. Temporary parking lots are announced during events such as the annual grand festival.
• Worship etiquette: Kumano Nachi Taisha is one of the three Kumano shrines and the head shrine of more than 5,000 Kumano shrines throughout Japan. Because Nachi Falls itself is the object of worship, at Hiro Shrine you worship by putting your hands together facing the falls. Be mindful that it is a sacred place and worship quietly.
• Photography rules: The three-storied pagoda is not part of Kumano Nachi Taisha but a building of the neighboring Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple. Follow the signs at each temple and shrine as to whether photography is allowed inside halls and shrine buildings. The approach is narrow with many steps, so setting up a tripod for long shooting sessions blocks the way for other worshippers.
• Safety notes: The approach on Mt. Nachi has long flights of stone steps that become wet and slippery in rainy weather. The area around the plunge pool is wet from the spray, so visit in non-slip shoes.

Note: Tamaki Shrine is located in Totsukawa Village, Yoshino-gun, Nara Prefecture, and is not within Wakayama Prefecture, so it has been removed from this article.
