1. Katsunuma Winery Road — A European Landscape Woven by Brick and Ivy

Historic wineries are scattered throughout the Katsunuma area of Koshu City. Among them, the cobblestone paths and ivy-covered walls of Chateau Mercian evoke the atmosphere of a European chateau. In autumn, red ivy adorns the buildings, making them the ultimate photographic subject. Note that each winery is an operating private property; tours and tastings are often paid and require advance reservations, and accessible areas are limited. Be sure to check each winery's official website for visiting availability and reservation procedures before your visit.

• Best time: Autumn (October–November), in the late afternoon when sidelight beautifully illuminates the stone walls.
• Photography angle: Shooting from a low angle with the cobblestones in the foreground creates an outstanding sense of depth.
• Access: Taking a taxi from JR Chuo Main Line "Katsunuma Budokyo Station" is convenient (it is quite a distance on foot). If you plan to taste wine, please avoid driving.

2. Kofu Castle (Maizuru Castle Park) — The Classic Photogenic Shot of Stone Walls and Blue Sky

Kofu Castle ruins (Maizuru Castle Park) in central Kofu City is a historic spot where the rugged nozurazumi stone walls and well-maintained lawns are beautiful. 3. Kofu City Fujimura Memorial Hall (Former Mutsuzawa School Building) — Time Travel in a Meiji-Era Pseudo-Western Schoolhouse

Originally built in Meiji 8 (1875) in what was then Kamesawa, Kai City (formerly Mutsuzawa Village), this schoolhouse is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. It is a representative example of pseudo-Western architecture known as "Fujimura-style architecture," promoted by Yamanashi prefectural governor Fujimura Shiro. After being relocated to the grounds of Takeda Shrine in 1966, it was moved again to the north exit of Kofu Station in October 2010, where it is now open to the public as the Kofu City Fujimura Memorial Hall (admission free; open 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., closed Mondays). The white plaster walls, balcony, and Japanese-Western fusion window frames radiate a distinctive beauty.

• Best time: On overcast days, the even light brings out the gradations in the white plaster walls beautifully.
• Photography angle: Frame the entire building from a 45-degree angle, including the front balcony and tower, to highlight the pseudo-Western architectural character.
• Access: Immediately upon exiting the north exit of JR "Kofu Station" (within the Koshu Yumekoji area)

4. Shimobe Onsen Town — Nostalgic Alleys with Lingering Showa Retro

• Best season and time of day: For the Katsunuma wineries, summer when the grapes ripen through to the autumn foliage season. For the Kofu Castle ruins (Maizuru Castle Park), spring for the cherry blossoms and autumn for the foliage. At the Fujimura Memorial Hall, an overcast day captures the tones of the white plaster walls most beautifully. In the Shimobe Onsen hot spring town, the hour after sunset when the inn lanterns come on is full of atmosphere.
• Opening hours / event periods: The Kofu City Fujimura Memorial Hall (the former Mutsuzawa School building) is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed on Mondays. You are free to stroll around Maizuru Castle Park, but for the opening hours and closing days of building interiors such as the Inari Turret, please check the official information from Yamanashi Prefecture and Kofu City. Winery tours and shop opening hours differ from company to company.
• Admission: The Kofu City Fujimura Memorial Hall is free of charge. Entry to Maizuru Castle Park is also free. Winery tours and tastings are mostly paid, so check each company's official website for fees and duration. Day-use bathing fees at Shimobe Onsen differ from facility to facility.
• Access: The Kofu Castle ruins (Maizuru Castle Park) are about a 5-minute walk from the south exit of JR Kofu Station. The Kofu City Fujimura Memorial Hall is right outside the north exit of JR Kofu Station (part of the Koshu Yumekoji district). The Takeda Clan Residence ruins (Takeda Shrine) are right by the "Takeda Jinja" bus stop, about 10 minutes by bus from JR Kofu Station. The Shimobe Onsen town is within walking distance of "Shimobe-Onsen Station" on the JR Minobu Line. For the Katsunuma wineries, a taxi from "Katsunuma-Budokyo Station" on the JR Chuo Main Line is convenient.
• Parking: Check each facility's official website for the latest information on whether parking is available and what it costs. The roads in the Shimobe Onsen town and in the villages of Katsunuma are narrow, so please avoid parking on the street.
• Photography etiquette: Wineries are private property in active operation. Stay within the areas open to visitors, and do not photograph the brewing equipment or the staff without permission. Many tours are paid and require advance reservation, so always check. At Takeda Shrine (the Takeda Clan Residence ruins) there are places, such as inside the shrine buildings, where photography is restricted. The inns and houses of the Shimobe Onsen town are working buildings and private homes, so please be considerate and do not point your lens at entrances or through windows. Use a tripod only where it will not obstruct people passing, and note that commercial photography and drone flights require advance application to the facility or local government concerned.
• Safety notes: If you are tasting at a winery, you absolutely cannot drive. Please use public transport or a designated driver service. Night photography in the Shimobe Onsen town is difficult because there are few streetlights and it is hard to see your footing, so carry a light and avoid shooting on the roadway. The stone walls of the Kofu Castle ruins have steep drops, so take care not to go too close to the edge.
