Shimofuro Onsen
Near the northern tip of the Shimokita Peninsula, in a fishing port facing the Tsugaru Strait, Shimofuro Onsen is one of the northernmost hot spring towns on Honshu. Its bluish-white cloudy sulfur water is distinctive, and the town is blessed with the liveliness of a fishing community and the bounty of the sea. It is a town rich in history and the poetry of travel, said to have hosted great writers.
Highlights
The appeal lies in communal baths overlooking the strait and views of Hokkaido across the water. A walking path built along former railway remains lets you stroll while gazing at the sea. Fresh squid and other seafood should not be missed either.
Enjoying the Seasons
In summer, the cool breeze crossing the strait is refreshing, and in autumn, richly fatty fish come into season. Winter brings the power of the stormy strait and warm dishes after a bath that soothe the body. The starry sky seen in the clear air is also exceptional.
Access and Basic Information
From Mutsu City, the transport hub of the Shimokita Peninsula, it is about an hour by car heading north along the coastal road. As public transport is limited, traveling by car is convenient.
A Quick Tip
Winds along the strait are often strong, so bring a jacket to avoid catching a chill after your bath. Be sure to try the seasonal squid dishes.
