Ehime Prefecture is full of picturesque buildings and townscapes that beg to be photographed. From historic castle towns to charming retro Western-style buildings, here are the most photogenic spots in the prefecture.

1. Matsuyama Castle | A White Fortress in the Sky

When it comes to photo spots in Ehime, Matsuyama Castle is the undisputed champion. Take the lift or ropeway to the summit and you're greeted by the breathtaking sight of the gleaming white keep set against the blue sky.

Photo appeal: The contrast between the white castle walls and the sky is stunning — combined with autumn foliage or spring cherry blossoms, it's simply spectacular. Best time: The clear morning light is ideal. The cherry blossom season in spring (March–April) is especially recommended. Shooting angle: Look up at the keep with an "upward-tilt" composition for a shot full of impact. Access: Approx. 5-minute walk from the Iyo Railway city tram "Okaido" stop to the ropeway/lift boarding area (Shinonome-guchi Station building). From Matsuyama-shi Station, take the city tram to "Okaido." Admission: Castle keep observation: Adults ¥520, children ¥160. Photo appeal: The castle rising through the mist is fantastical, like a scene from a fantasy film. Best time: October–December, early morning around 6:00–8:00, when river mist is most likely to form. Shooting angle: Looking toward the castle from the opposite bank of the Hiji River is the top recommendation — also aim for the castle's reflection on the water. Access: Approx. 30-minute walk or 10-minute taxi from JR Iyo-Ozu Station. By the town loop bus "Gururin Oozu," alight at "Ozujo-mae" and walk approx. 5 minutes. 4. Dogo Onsen Honkan | Hot Spring Romance in a Meiji Architectural Masterpiece

Dogo Onsen Honkan, one of Japan's oldest hot springs, is an awe-inspiring wooden structure built in Meiji 27 (1894). The sight of white-and-red banners fluttering above it is the very pinnacle of "Japanese Instagram-worthy."

Photo appeal: At night the illuminated main building creates a magical atmosphere. Drifting steam also makes for a beautiful shot. Best time: The nighttime illumination period is especially recommended. The main building operates from 6:00 to 23:00 (Kami-no-yu ground floor; last entry 22:30), making exterior photography easy even at night. Shooting angle: Positioning yourself head-on from the stone-paved front approach and shooting straight-on conveys the building's dignity and grandeur. Access: From Matsuyama-shi Station, take the Iyo Railway city tram (approx. 20 minutes) to Dogo Onsen Station, then walk through the Dogo Haikara-dori shopping street (approx. 5 minutes).

5. Unomachi Streetscape (Uwamachi, Seiyo City) | A Quiet Ancient Road of White Walls and Lattice Windows

Unomachi, located in Uwamachi, Seiyo City near Uwajima, is a hidden gem that still retains the atmosphere of an Edo-period post town. Because few tourists visit, you can take your time and shoot at a leisurely pace — a major attraction in itself.

Photo appeal: The white plaster walls and the quiet bearing of the old merchant houses create a unique world. After rain, the wet stone pavement reflects light and the scene becomes even more dreamlike. Best time: Overcast mornings provide even, uniform light that is easy to work with. Shooting angle: Composing the old highway straight through the frame in vertical orientation produces an Instagram-ready shot. Access: Approx. 5-minute walk from JR Unomachi Station.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: Matsuyama Castle is at its best with the cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves, in the clear light of the morning. The river mist at Ozu Castle is most likely to appear in the early morning from October to December, and Dogo Onsen Honkan is best during the illumination after sunset.
• Opening hours and periods: The keep and the Ninomaru Historic Site Garden of Matsuyama Castle are open 9:00 to 17:00 (until 17:30 in August and until 16:30 from December to January), and the keep is closed on the third Wednesday of December. The ropeway runs 8:30 to 17:30 all year round, while the chairlift runs 8:30 to 17:00 and is suspended in rainy weather. Ozu Castle is open 9:00 to 17:00 (ticket sales end at 16:30). The ground floor of the Kami-no-Yu bath at Dogo Onsen Honkan is open 6:00 to 23:00 (ticket sales end at 22:30).
• Fees: At Matsuyama Castle, admission to the keep is 520 yen for adults and 160 yen for children, and the ropeway and chairlift cost 520 yen for adults and 260 yen for children round trip (one way 270 yen for adults and 140 yen for children). Ozu Castle is 550 yen for adults and 220 yen for children (a combined ticket for the two facilities of Ozu Castle and Garyu Sanso is 880 yen for adults, and a three-facility ticket that adds Bansenso is 1,100 yen for adults). At Dogo Onsen Honkan the ground floor of the Kami-no-Yu bath is 700 yen for adults and 350 yen for children, while a second-floor room at the Tama-no-Yu bath is 2,000 yen for adults, with prices varying by the floor and room you use. Strolling through the townscapes of Uchiko Town and Unomachi is itself free of charge.
• Access: For Matsuyama Castle, it is about a 5-minute walk from the Okaido stop on the Iyotetsu city tram to the ropeway and chairlift boarding point (the Shinonomeguchi station building). Ozu Castle is about a 30-minute walk or a 10-minute taxi ride from JR Iyo-Ozu Station, or about a 5-minute walk from the Ozujo-mae stop on the Gururin Ozu city loop bus. Dogo Onsen Honkan is about a 5-minute walk from Dogo Onsen tram station through the shopping arcade.
• Parking: The nearest options for Ozu Castle are the Ozu Civic Hall car park (paid) or the Ozu City Tourist Car Park No. 1 (free). Around Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Onsen, please use the paid car parks in the area. The streets in the historic districts of Uchiko Town and Unomachi are narrow, so it is safer to park in the designated tourist car parks and walk.
• Photography rules: Photography is of course prohibited in the bathing rooms and changing rooms of Dogo Onsen Honkan. There may also be restrictions on photographing the interior and exhibits of the Matsuyama Castle keep and the displays inside Ozu Castle, so please follow the notices on site. Apart from the buildings open to the public, the Yokaichi Gokoku district of Uchiko Town and the townscape of Unomachi consist of houses and shops still in daily use. Do not enter private grounds, and do not photograph residents without permission.
• Safety notes: Inside the Matsuyama Castle keep there are steep stairways and low lintels. Use the handrails and do not climb or descend while holding your camera up. If you head to the far bank of the Hijikawa River in search of the river mist, remember that it is dark in the early morning and the riverbank is slippery, so watch your footing. The streets in the historic districts are used by local traffic, so avoid taking photographs in the middle of the road.
