Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum

At the foot of a hill overlooking the city of Matsuyama stands a building that radiates a distinctive presence. It is the museum of concrete and light created by the world-renowned architect Tadao Ando—the "Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum."

Centered on Ryotaro Shiba's immortal masterpiece "Saka no Ue no Kumo" (Clouds Above the Hill), the exhibits carefully unearth the backbone and spirit of the Japanese people who lived through the turbulent Meiji era, resonating strongly not only with history lovers but also with those who are not. The fact that the protagonists, the brothers Yoshifuru and Saneyuki Akiyama, and Masaoka Shiki, were born and raised in Matsuyama gives the exhibits a unique reality and warmth.

Inside the Keep of Matsuyama Castle

Matsuyama Castle on a rainy day has a completely different face from sunny days.

Counted among the 12 surviving original castle keeps, Matsuyama Castle overwhelms visitors not only with its imposing appearance but also with the weight of history hidden inside the keep. The displays of materials related to the successive lords of the Matsuyama domain, as well as weapons and armor, are extensive, letting you experience the history of Shikoku from the Sengoku to the Edo period. On rainy days the far-reaching views may be limited, but conversely it is a perfect opportunity to engage seriously with the displays inside the keep. For those not satisfied with the "standard" attractions of Ehime tourism, there is a place we would love you to visit. It is a one-of-a-kind museum quietly tucked away in Imabari City—the "Imabari City Iwata Ken Museum of Mother and Child."

The theme of "mother and child" that the sculptor Ken Iwata pursued throughout his life. This space, where his warm and powerful sculptures are scattered indoors and out, gently softens the hearts of visitors. On rainy days the outdoor exhibits are dampened by drizzle, making the texture of the bronze stand out all the more. In the indoor gallery you can view the works more up close, creating a moist, lingering emotion different from a sunny day. It lacks the flashiness of a typical tourist site, but precisely for that reason it pierces the heart—such a museum.

Hidden gem info: On a weekday rainy day with few visitors, you can sometimes speak at length with the curators and museum staff. They may share the thoughts behind the works and Ken Iwata's creative anecdotes, deepening your understanding of the works immeasurably.

• Best season: Early summer through autumn, with lush greenery, is recommended. It is a season when the combination of outdoor sculptures and nature is beautiful

• Access: From JR Imabari Station, use a bus or taxi. Within Imabari City, access by car is convenient. From Matsuyama to Imabari is about 35 minutes by JR limited express
• Tip for travelers: Since it is far from the sightseeing spots in central Matsuyama, it is smooth to combine it with a day visiting Imabari. As Imabari is also famous as a town of towels and shipbuilding, after your museum visit it is recommended to pair it with a tour of Imabari towel shops. Access Information

The main sightseeing spots of Ehime/Matsuyama can be accessed smoothly by city tram (Iyotetsu).

Dogo Onsen Honkan: Get off at "Dogo Onsen Station" on the Iyotetsu city tram, about a 5-minute walk. From Matsuyamashi Station it is about 20 minutes by tram.

Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum / Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art: Both are reached by getting off at "Okaido Station" on the Iyotetsu city tram, within about a 5-minute walk. Located in the heart of Matsuyama's sightseeing area, the two facilities are within walking distance and can be toured together.

Matsuyama Castle: After getting off at "Okaido Station" or "Kenchomae Station," about 3 minutes by ropeway.

Imabari City Iwata Ken Museum of Mother and Child: Use a taxi or bus from JR Imabari Station. Between Matsuyama and Imabari is about 35 minutes by JR limited express, or there are also highway buses.

💡 Travel tip: For the main spots in central Matsuyama, using a one-day pass for the city tram is convenient and economical. On rainy days trams are prone to delays and crowding, so it is recommended to act with a schedule that allows some leeway. Also, a long umbrella is more useful than a folding umbrella on days with strong wind and rain. Ehime's rain is a blessing—please enjoy at your leisure the different face of Matsuyama you won't see at other times.

Opening hours and closing days of each facility

• Dogo Onsen Honkan: The Kami-no-Yu ground-floor bath is open 6:00-23:00 (last tickets 22:30, 60 minutes of use). Higher-grade plans such as the Tama-no-Yu second-floor seating and the Tama-no-Yu third-floor private rooms are available 6:00-22:00 (last tickets 21:00 and others). Viewing of the Yushinden is 9:00-17:00 (last tickets 16:30)
• Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum: 9:00-18:30 (last entry 18:00). Closed on Mondays as a rule. There is also a closed period every year in February and March for changing the exhibits. The Museum Cafe inside is open 10:00-17:00 (last order 16:30)
• Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art: 9:40-18:00 (last entry 17:30). Closed on Mondays (open on the first Monday of each month, with the following Tuesday closed instead). Entry times may differ for special and rented exhibitions
• Imabari City Iwata Ken Mother and Child Museum: 9:00-17:00. Closed every Monday (as a rule moved to the following day when Monday is a public holiday) and from December 27 to December 31

Guide to admission fees

• Dogo Onsen Honkan: Kami-no-Yu ground floor 700 yen for adults / 350 yen for children; Tama-no-Yu second-floor seating 1,300 yen for adults / 650 yen for children; Tama-no-Yu third-floor private room 2,000 yen for adults / 1,000 yen for children. Viewing the Yushinden only costs 500 yen for adults / 250 yen for children. The Dogo Onsen 3-Bathhouse Pass, which covers all three public bathhouses, is 1,400 yen for adults / 640 yen for children
• Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum: Admission to the exhibition rooms is 500 yen for general visitors (400 yen for groups of 20 or more) and free for junior high school students and younger. Entry to the second floor is free of charge
• Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art: The collection exhibition costs 340 yen for general visitors and 230 yen for high school and university students (270 yen and 180 yen respectively for groups). Fees for special exhibitions differ from exhibition to exhibition
• Imabari City Iwata Ken Mother and Child Museum: 310 yen for general visitors and 160 yen for students (250 yen for adults and 130 yen for students in groups of 20 or more)
• Matsuyama Castle: A ticket for the castle keep is 520 yen for adults and 160 yen for children. The ropeway and chairlift cost 520 yen round trip (260 yen for children) and 270 yen one way (140 yen for children)

Access (can you get there without getting wet?)

• The main sights in central Matsuyama are reached mainly by the Iyotetsu city tram. You have to walk outdoors for a few minutes from the tram stop to each facility, so an umbrella is essential. None of the facilities connect directly to a station
• Dogo Onsen Honkan is about a 5-minute walk from the Dogo Onsen tram stop. Dogo Haikara-dori, which runs from the tram stop, is a covered shopping arcade, so you can walk it relatively dry
• The Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum is about a 5-minute walk from the Okaido tram stop. The Okaido shopping street is also an arcade, so it is an easy route to take even in the rain
• The Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art stands inside Shiroyama Park (Horinouchi), and part of the way is through the park, so rain gear is needed
• For Matsuyama Castle you walk from the tram stop to the ropeway and chairlift station (Shinonome-guchi Station building), and from the summit station to the keep there is a continuous slope and stone steps. This is the stretch where you will get wettest on a rainy day
• The Imabari City Iwata Ken Mother and Child Museum is on Omishima Island, and getting there assumes travel by car

Parking

• Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum: There is no parking for general visitors. Please use a nearby paid car park or public transport (there are 6 spaces for wheelchair users, and you need to contact the museum in advance to use them)
• Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art: There is no car park exclusively for the museum inside Shiroyama Park. The Prefectural Office West Car Park (entered from in front of the prefectural office or Higashi-Horibata) can be used for up to 2 hours, but spaces are limited, so public transport is recommended. Around the museum there are 4 spaces reserved for parking-permit holders (they cannot be reserved)
• Matsuyama Castle: Use one of the paid car parks around the Shinonome-guchi ropeway station building

What requires a reservation

• Higher-grade plans at Dogo Onsen Honkan, such as the Tama-no-Yu third-floor private rooms, are limited to 5 groups a day, so if you definitely want to use one, check the details on the official website in advance
• Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum: Groups of 20 or more must book in advance
• Imabari City Iwata Ken Mother and Child Museum: Groups of 20 or more qualify for the group discount. Individual visitors do not need a reservation
• Apart from the above, individual visitors can enter on the day without a reservation

Points to note on rainy days

• At Matsuyama Castle the stone steps and slopes up to the keep become slippery. Avoid heels and sandals and wear comfortable walking shoes. The ropeway and chairlift may be suspended in bad weather, so check the operating status before you set out
• At Dogo Onsen Honkan the time at which ticket sales end differs for each bathing plan. If you are heading there in the evening or later, watch the cut-off times
• The Imabari City Iwata Ken Mother and Child Museum also has sculptures placed outdoors, so it is reassuring to bring rain gear
• Neither the Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art nor the Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum has its own car park, so the city tram combined with the arcades is all the more comfortable on a rainy day
