Dogo Onsen

Close to the center of Matsuyama, Dogo is one of Japans oldest hot spring resorts, wrapped in legends said to span three thousand years. Its clear, gentle alkaline simple spring quietly eases the weariness of travel.

Highlights

The three-story wooden main building, built in the Meiji era, is a designated Important Cultural Property with a commanding presence. Nearby stand the Asuka-no-Yu annex, inspired by ancient Asuka-period design, and the locally loved Tsubaki-no-Yu, making a leisurely bath tour easy.

Enjoying the Seasons

After bathing, stroll the covered shopping arcade where mikan juice and Botchan dango dumplings await. At night the illuminated main building looks magical, glowing brightest in the crisp autumn air.

Access and Basic Information

From Matsuyama-Shieki, take the city tram to Dogo Onsen Station in about 20 minutes; the baths are steps from the stop. The water is an alkaline simple spring.

A Quick Tip

The main building gets crowded, so an early morning soak is ideal. Wandering the town in a yukata afterward adds to the charm.
