Dogo Onsen โ 3,000 Years of History at Japan's Oldest Hot Spring
Dogo Onsen
Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan, with a recorded history extending at least 3,000 years โ and by some legendary accounts, far longer. The iconic main bathhouse, Dogo Onsen Honkan, is a three-story wooden structure completed in 1894 that is designated as an Important Cultural Property, and it served as the inspiration for the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's animated film "Spirited Away." This is not just a hot spring โ it is a living monument to the soul of Japanese bathing culture.
Highlights
The Dogo Onsen Honkan is currently undergoing renovation while remaining open for bathing โ a phased restoration that has been managed to preserve the historic building while ensuring visitors can still experience the famous waters. The spring water is a gentle alkaline simple thermal spring that softens the skin beautifully and is said to be effective for fatigue, nerve conditions, and skin ailments. Multiple bathing plans are available, including access to the second-floor tatami rest areas where you can relax in yukata robe with green tea and rice crackers after bathing. The surrounding Dogo Onsen Shotengai arcade is full of sweet shops, craft stores, and local restaurants.
