Dogo Onsen and Matsuyama Castle โ Japan's Oldest Hot Spring and a Magnificent Castle Town
Dogo Onsen and Matsuyama Castle
Matsuyama, the largest city in Shikoku, offers two of Japan's most celebrated attractions within close proximity of each other: Dogo Onsen, one of the oldest and most storied hot springs in the country, and Matsuyama Castle, one of the finest original wooden castles remaining in Japan. Together they make Matsuyama one of the most satisfying Japanese cities to spend a day or two exploring.
Highlights
Dogo Onsen Honkan (1894) is a multi-story wooden bathhouse of extraordinary architectural beauty, designated as an Important Cultural Property, known as the inspiration for the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's "Spirited Away." The alkaline hot spring water softens the skin and soothes tired muscles. Matsuyama Castle, perched 132 meters above the city on Mt. Katsuyama, is one of only 12 surviving original Japanese castles (not concrete reconstructions) and offers superb views of the city and Seto Inland Sea from its keep. The castle grounds are famous for cherry blossoms in spring. The beloved poet Masaoka Shiki was born in Matsuyama, and the city celebrates its literary heritage at several museums.
