Dogo Onsen and Matsuyama Castle One Day Course

This is the royal road route linking Matsuyamas two great sights, Dogo Onsen and Matsuyama Castle, easily connected by the city tram. Enjoy the atmosphere of the hot spring town in the morning and the view from the surviving keep in the afternoon. Almost the entire trip runs on the city tram, making it ideal for a first visit to Matsuyama.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Dogo Onsen Honkan Look up at the dignified wooden building, built in 1894, and try a steamed hot spring bun in the nearby shopping arcade. The simplest bathing option, the ground floor Kami no yu, costs around 700 yen for adults. The bathhouse opens at 6:00 in the morning, so an early soak is a good way to avoid the crowds.

10:30 Stroll through Dogo Wander leisurely past the footbath at Hojoen in front of Dogo Onsen Station and spots tied to the novel Botchan. In front of the station stands the Botchan Karakuri Clock, which comes to life on the hour.

12:00 Tram to Okaido for lunch Ride the tram from Dogo Onsen Station and get off at Okaido stop. Enjoy local flavors such as sea bream rice at a restaurant in central Matsuyama. The tram runs at a flat fare of 210 yen for adults by IC card or 230 yen in cash as of 2025.

14:00 Ropeway up to Matsuyama Castle The ropeway station is a few minutes on foot from Okaido. Take the ropeway or chairlift near the summit, then climb the keep, counted among Japans twelve surviving castle towers, for a sweeping view of the Seto Inland Sea and the city. The ropeway and lift round trip is 520 yen for adults, the keep admission is 520 yen, and the combined ticket covering both is a good value at 1040 yen for adults.

16:00 Rest in Shiroyama Park After descending the keep, walk the green paths of Shiroyama, also called Katsuyama, and take in the scenery to close out the day.

Highlights

The massive wooden architecture of Dogo Onsen Honkan and the keep, counted among the twelve surviving castle towers of Japan, are the two main highlights. The retro Botchan steam train running on the tram lines adds to the mood. Note that the Botchan train is not covered by the day pass and requires a separate fare, so check locally if you plan to ride it.

Access and Tips

The city tram is handy from Dogo to Matsuyama Castle. A free pass such as the Iyotetsu City Tram 1 Day Ticket lets you hop on and off freely for an efficient trip, though the Botchan train is excluded. Reach the castle by ropeway or chairlift, or climb on foot if you feel energetic.

Practical Travel Notes

Time guide: Allow about two to three hours for bathing and strolling at Dogo Onsen Honkan, and about one and a half to two hours for Matsuyama Castle including the ropeway and keep. The whole route fills a full day comfortably.

Getting there: From Matsuyama Airport, the Iyotetsu airport limousine bus is convenient and reaches Dogo Onsen Station in about 40 minutes. Around the city, the tram is the main mode of transport. Since the tram charges a flat fare of 210 yen by IC for adults, a day pass pays off if you ride three or more times.

Bathing and admission guide: The simplest ground floor Kami no yu at Dogo Onsen Honkan is around 700 yen for adults. For Matsuyama Castle, the combined ticket covering keep admission and the ropeway round trip is about 1040 yen for adults.

Avoiding crowds: Dogo Onsen Honkan is busy from midday into the evening, so a morning soak around 6:00 is the sweet spot. Matsuyama Castle is also relatively quiet in the morning.

A Quick Tip

The main bathhouse gets crowded, so an early morning soak is recommended. Wear comfortable shoes to enjoy the Shiroyama walk. Some stairs inside the keep are steep, so watch your footing.
