Shinokura Shrine and Its Sacred Spring

Located in Ono City, Fukui Prefecture, Shinokura Shrine is an ancient shrine said to date back to the year 717. The whole precinct is a rich spring-water site, and the sacred spring beside the Benten Pond to the right of the worship hall has long been known as healing water said to help eye ailments. It is not a flashy, crowded site, but a lesser-known power spot cherished by the people of inner Echizen as healing sacred water.

Highlights

- The sacred spring linked to the legend that the deity Okuninushi gave healing water for the eyes - Clear water called Shinokura eye medicine, with people coming from afar to draw it - A venerable shrine hall restored by Kanamori Nagachika, lord of Ono Castle - A quiet sacred ground wrapped in pure spring water

Enjoying the Seasons

From spring into summer, fresh greenery brings out the clarity of the spring water, and the cool air feels refreshing. Autumn gently colors the grounds with red leaves, and in winter, amid the snow-wrapped silence, the purity of the sacred spring stands out all the more. Throughout the year you can spend healing time quietly facing the water.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Shinokura, Ono City, Fukui Prefecture - About 20 minutes on foot from Echizen Ono Station on the JR Etsumi-Hoku Line - About 400 meters northwest from the Shinokura intersection on Route 158 - Parking available; some visitors draw the spring water to take home

A Quick Tip

If you want to take the spring water home, bringing an empty bottle is a good idea. As it is sacred water, receive it with a heart of gratitude. Pairing it with a tour of Ono famous waters, such as Honganshozu, is also recommended.
