Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum โ€” One of the World's Three Great Dinosaur Museums

The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, located amid the mountains of Katsuyama City in central Fukui, is recognized internationally as one of the three greatest dinosaur museums in the world โ€” alongside those in Alberta, Canada, and Zigong, China. Built above an active excavation site where new specimens are discovered regularly, it combines world-class exhibition with genuine scientific frontier work in a single extraordinary facility.

Highlights

The museum's main exhibition hall is dominated by 44 complete or near-complete dinosaur skeletons, including multiple species discovered here in Fukui that are found nowhere else on Earth. Fukuiraptor, Fukuisaurus, and Fukuititan were all named for the prefecture where their fossils were unearthed, and seeing these unique specimens in the museum built above their discovery site creates a connection between science and place that is deeply satisfying.

The facility's design โ€” a gleaming silver dome rising from a forested hillside โ€” signals architectural ambition commensurate with its content. Inside, sophisticated dioramas recreate Cretaceous ecosystems with scientific accuracy and visual drama. The fossil laboratory, visible through glass walls, allows visitors to watch researchers actively preparing specimens from the adjacent quarry โ€” science in real time, not merely displayed history.

Outdoor dinosaur excavation experiences (seasonal) allow visitors to participate in guided fossil discovery activities at the actual dig site, making this one of Japan's most immersive museum experiences for all ages.

Getting There & Tips

From Fukui Station, take the Echizen Railway to Katsuyama Station, then a shuttle bus to the museum (approximately 70 minutes total). Book excavation experiences in advance online.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round for the museum itself. Spring and autumn for outdoor excavation activities in comfortable temperatures. Weekdays offer significantly shorter queues.
