Welling up beside the Yabe River that runs through Chikugo, Funagoya Onsen is an iron-bearing carbonated mineral spring once said to hold the highest such content in Japan. Its composition was recognized in a Meiji era analysis, and it has long been a bathing retreat said to aid the stomach and anemia when drunk and to ease nerve pain when bathed in. Along the river spreads the wide Chikugo park, so you can enjoy greenery together with the water.

Highlights

  • An iron-bearing carbonated mineral spring once called the richest in Japan, with its historic mineral-spring heritage
  • The riverside Chikugo park along the Yabe River, plus rest and bathing stops such as the Koibotaru facility
  • A distinctive iron-tinted water that is also enjoyed for drinking

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring features a nearby plum grove and cherry trees along the Yabe River. Summer offers cool air by the water, autumn brings spider lilies blooming in the fields, and winter makes the mineral bath that warms a chilled body feel especially comforting. The park lawns are pleasant for a stroll all year round.

Access and Basic Information

  • Location: along the Yabe River in Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Access: about 15 minutes on foot from JR Chikugo-Funagoya Station, or a few minutes by car from the Yame interchange of the Kyushu Expressway
  • Spring quality: an iron-bearing carbonated mineral spring type; the day-use Koibotaru bathhouse uses a magnesium, sodium and calcium bicarbonate spring
  • Day use (Koibotaru bathhouse): admission is 700 yen for adults, 350 yen for ages 4 to 12, and 500 yen for those 70 and over or with a disability. Hours are 10:00 to 21:00 (reception until 20:30), closed Tuesdays (open on public-holiday Tuesdays, with the following Wednesday closed), parking for 65 cars. There is also a free footbath outside the facility

Practical Travel Notes

  • Best season and time: the cherry and plum spring and the spider-lily autumn pair well with a park stroll. For drop-in bathing, just after opening or before evening tends to be quieter
  • Avoiding crowds: the car park fills on weekends and holidays, so public transport or the nearby Chikugo park car park is recommended
  • Time needed: about one to two hours for the bath and footbath alone, or roughly half a day including a park walk and the local-goods shop
  • Nearby real spots: the wide Chikugo park, the Koibotaru local-goods hall, and, a little further, the tea fields of Yame and the river-boat rides of Yanagawa
  • Budget sense: the bath is around 700 yen for adults. Even with shopping and a meal at the goods hall, a few thousand yen per person allows a relaxed visit

A Quick Tip

The mineral water has a crisp, clean touch and is usually warmed before bathing. A relaxed plan is to first enjoy the mood at the free footbath, then soak slowly in the bathhouse afterward.
