Rising steam along the banks of the Chikugo River marks Harazuru Onsen, the leading spa district of Asakura. It blends two skin-friendly waters, an alkaline simple spring and a simple sulfur spring, which together earn it the nickname of the double beauty bath. A broad view over the Chikushi plain and a silky touch on the skin welcome every traveler. About one hour by car from the Fukuoka area, it suits both a day trip and an overnight stay.

Highlights

  • The alkaline spring softens old skin while the sulfur spring is said to brighten the complexion, a paired beauty effect
  • Open-air baths facing the Chikugo River and the generous hospitality of long-established inns
  • The traditional cormorant fishing that colors the river on summer nights

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring brings rape blossoms and cherry trees across the surrounding farmland, while summer nights glow with the bonfires of cormorant fishing. Autumn offers persimmons and grapes from the Asakura harvest, and winter lets the silky water warm a chilled body slowly and deeply.

Access and Basic Information

  • Location: along the Chikugo River in Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Access: about 10 minutes by car from Chikugo-Yoshii Station on the JR Kyudai Line, or about 5 minutes from the Haki interchange of the Oita Expressway. It is about one hour by car from the Fukuoka area
  • Spring quality: weakly alkaline to alkaline simple spring and simple sulfur spring, the silky double beauty bath
  • Day use: many inns accept drop-in bathing, with fees around a thousand yen. For example, an inn known for its jungle bath offers day bathing at about 1000 yen for adults, roughly 11:00 to 20:00 (last reception 19:00). It may be suspended on busy weekends, so booking or checking ahead is wise

Practical Travel Notes

  • Best season and time: the rape-blossom and cherry spring and the cormorant-fishing summer (typically early summer to early autumn) are popular. For drop-in bathing, the quieter early afternoon is recommended
  • Avoiding crowds: inns fill up on long weekends and in the foliage season, so weekdays or mornings are more relaxed for a day trip. Popular baths are surest with a reservation
  • Time needed: about one to two hours for a simple soak, or half a day for bath-hopping and a meal
  • Nearby real spots: Asakura with its famous triple waterwheels, the fruit picking of Ukiha across the river, and the castle town of Akizuki. A little further lies Chikugogawa Onsen
  • Budget sense: day-use bathing is around a thousand yen. Even with bath-hopping and a meal, a few thousand yen per person allows an enjoyable visit

A Quick Tip

Many inns welcome day visitors, so it is well worth touring several baths to compare how the different waters feel on your skin. The sulfur spring has a slight scent, so those with sensitive skin may keep soaks short and rinse off lightly afterward for comfort.
