Soaking to the murmur of the Chikugo River as it flows through Ukiha, Chikugogawa Onsen is a quiet spa that opened in the mid twentieth century. Its clear, colorless simple radium spring has a mellow touch, and it has long been loved as water that children and the elderly alike can enjoy with peace of mind. Designated by the Ministry of the Environment as a national health resort, it is still cherished as a place to rest body and mind.

Highlights

  • A calm setting designated by the Ministry of the Environment as a national health resort, well suited to rest and recovery
  • A gentle simple radium spring and open-air baths with a fine view over the riverbank
  • Inns that welcome pets and children, making it kind to families as well

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring brings cherry blossoms along the river, and early summer offers fruit picking in nearby orchards. Autumn ripens persimmons and grapes, and in winter you can savor the local Asakura and Ukiha harvest after your bath, tasting the bounty of each passing season. On summer nights, cormorant fishing on the Chikugo River adds to the mood.

Access and Basic Information

  • Location: along the Chikugo River in Ukiha City, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Access: about 5 minutes by car from Chikugo-Oishi Station on the JR Kyudai Line, or a few minutes from the Haki interchange of the Oita Expressway. It is about one hour by car from the Fukuoka metropolitan area
  • Spring quality: simple radioactive radium spring, clear and colorless with a mellow feel
  • Day use: some inns in the district accept drop-in bathing, with fees roughly in the range of a few hundred to just over a thousand yen. Hours and closing days differ by inn, so checking ahead is wise

Practical Travel Notes

  • Best season and time: the cherry-blossom spring and the fruit-picking months from early summer to autumn are especially popular. The riverside at dusk has a calm mood, making it well suited to an unhurried overnight stay
  • Avoiding crowds: inns fill up on long weekends and during the autumn foliage season, so for drop-in bathing the early afternoon tends to be more relaxed
  • Time needed: about one to two hours for a simple soak, or half a day to a full day if combined with nearby sightseeing
  • Nearby real spots: the fruit-picking orchards of Ukiha, the white-walled streets of Yoshii, and Harazuru Onsen across the river. A little further lies the castle town of Akizuki
  • Budget sense: drop-in bathing runs a few hundred to just over a thousand yen per person. Including fruit picking and a meal, a few thousand yen is a safe estimate

A Quick Tip

It faces Harazuru Onsen just across the Chikugo River, so a bath-hopping trip that takes in both districts is a fine idea. The radium water has a soft, gentle feel, so rather than one long soak it is pleasant to bathe in several shorter sessions.
