Shirakawa-go Gassho-Zukuri Village — World Heritage Snow Scenery
In the depths of Gifu Prefecture's Hida mountains, where winter snows regularly exceed three meters, the gassho-zukuri farmhouse villages of Shirakawa-go have stood for centuries — their steeply angled thatched roofs shedding snowloads that would crush conventional structures, their interiors warm with irori hearth fires and generations of accumulated family life. UNESCO's 1995 World Heritage designation affirmed what local people have always known: this is a landscape and building tradition of exceptional universal value.
Highlights
The winter illumination events at Ogimachi hamlet, held on select January and February evenings, transform the snow-laden village into a scene of otherworldly beauty. Every farmhouse is lit from within while the thatched roofs are buried under white, and the surrounding forest stands black against the winter sky — a composition of extraordinary visual power that attracts visitors from across Japan and internationally despite the cold and the lottery system required for access.
Beyond the famous winterscape, Shirakawa-go rewards every season: spring's cherry blossoms against the dark thatched roofs; summer's surrounding rice paddies a vivid green; autumn's maple and beech forest turning the valley walls red and gold. The community's current 100-plus farmhouses represent perhaps a third of what once stood — village solidarity preserved many that would otherwise have been demolished.
The adjacent hamlet of Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture, easily visited on the same day, adds two smaller but perfectly preserved settlements (Ainokura and Suganuma) to the itinerary.
