Nakamiya Onsen, a Secluded Spring in the Bosom of Hakusan

🎨 Ishikawa|June 30, 2026

Nakamiya Onsen

A secluded spring tucked along the Hakusan Shirakawago White Road, deep in the mountains of Hakusan City. It is said to have been found by the great priest Taicho, who is credited with opening Hakusan to worship, and its founding is dated more than 1300 years ago. It has long been cherished as a renowned spring known as the bath for the stomach and intestines.

Highlights

The water gushes out without heating or dilution, a precious free-flowing spring that can even be drunk. Surrounded by deep mountains and quiet, you can savor a leisurely therapeutic mood beside clear air and the sound of a stream. Its serene atmosphere, evoking the history of mountain asceticism, is a real charm.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring brings fresh greenery, summer the coolness of the valley, and autumn a sweep of crimson foliage. Because the area lies under heavy snow, however, it is a seasonal spring that closes in winter when the White Road is shut.

Access and Basic Information

About 65 minutes by car from the Komatsu interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway, or roughly 70 minutes from the Hakusan interchange. In a typical year it operates only from late spring, when the White Road opens, through autumn. Before visiting, always confirm the operating period and road conditions with the official information.

A Quick Tip

Since you travel a mountain road to reach it, it is reassuring to visit with an unhurried schedule. As the water is drinkable, trying it according to the proper custom is also recommended.
