Climbing Mt. Hakusan and the Super Rindo Road

Mt. Hakusan, one of Japan's three sacred mountains, offers a climbing experience that combines spiritual tradition, botanical diversity, and alpine grandeur in extraordinary measure. The ascent follows ancient pilgrimage routes through forests of ancient beech, past alpine ponds, and up to a summit sacred to the mountain deity for over 1,300 years. The Super Rindo (Super Forest Road) approach through Ishikawa's deep mountain valleys adds a scenic dimension available to cyclists and drivers.

Highlights

The standard Betto-dejima trail from the Ishikawa side ascends through dramatic terrain with well-maintained stone paths. The transition from beech forest to subalpine zone to alpine moorland โ€” each with its distinct vegetation and atmosphere โ€” gives the climb a sense of progressive revelation. The mountain hut at Murodo (2,450 meters) provides overnight accommodation and a base for summit attempts.

The summit crater area contains the sacred Midagaike lake and multiple secondary peaks, each offering different perspectives on the vast landscape below. In clear conditions, Mt. Fuji is visible to the east โ€” a connection between sacred peaks that pilgrims have treasured for centuries. The inner shrine atop Gozengamine is modest in scale but overwhelming in situation.

The Super Rindo, a mountain road traversing ridgelines high above Hakusan National Park, opens to cyclists for limited periods in autumn and offers some of the finest mountain cycling in Japan, with sweeping views of the Hakusan massif and the Shogawa valley far below.

Getting There & Tips

The Betto-dejima trailhead requires a shuttle bus from Ichirino Onsen during peak season (private vehicles restricted). Two-day mountain hut itinerary is standard; check booking availability several months in advance for summer.

Best Time to Visit

Late July to mid-August for full trail access and wildflowers. Early October for foliage descent, though summit can have early snow.
