5 Stunning Photo Spots in Hokkaido

Hokkaido is home to breathtaking landscapes that stop you in your tracks. Vast open plains, crystal-clear skies, vivid flower fields — every scene looks like a painting. Here are five of Hokkaido's most photogenic scenic spots that absolutely belong on your Instagram feed.

01 | Farm Tomita (Nakafurano Town)

According to the official website, the farm is located at Kisen-kita 15-go, Nakafurano Town, Sorachi District, Hokkaido (not Furano City). In July, the lavender fields that stretch as far as the eye can see are one of Hokkaido's most iconic Instagram-worthy spots, with the breathtaking contrast of blue-purple gradations against green. As this is a working farm that produces flowers, please never enter the fields or walk among the flowers. Check the official website for opening hours and admission information.

• Best angle: The "Irodori-no-Hatake" (Rainbow Field), where purple, pink, and yellow flowers bloom in layers, has an exceptional richness of color
• Best season/time: Around 10 a.m. in early-to-mid July, when the light is soft and the flower colors really stand out
• Shooting angle: Pull back from one end of the field at a diagonal angle to bring out depth and a sweeping sense of scale

02 | Blue Pond (Biei Town)

A mysteriously cobalt-blue pond (Shirogane, Biei Town). It is known for the fantastical scene of dead trees standing in the water. The Blue Pond parking lot charges a fee; according to the Biei Town Tourism Association's announcement, the fee changed on July 1, 2026 (Reiwa 8) from the previous rate of ¥500 for standard cars. Check the Biei Town and Biei Town Tourism Association official websites for the latest fees and payment methods. Do not go beyond the fence or approach the water's edge.

• Best angle: The color of the pond shifts with the weather and time of day — on overcast days it turns a deeper, richer blue
• Best season/time: Fresh greenery in May–June, or autumn foliage in October. Early morning is best for reflections on the water's surface
• Shooting angle: From the viewing deck, a horizontal composition capturing the whole pond creates a beautiful balance of water and trees
• Access: From JR Biei Station, take the Dohoku Bus Shirogane Line (bound for Shirogane Onsen). [Important — as of July 2026] According to Biei Town's announcement, the volcanic alert level for Mount Tokachi was raised from 1 to 2 on June 18, 2026, and a very small-scale eruption occurred at the 62-2 crater on July 22. A no-entry zone extends approximately 1.5 km from the crater. The Shirogane area, Bogakudai, and residential areas are outside the restricted zone, and Shirogane Onsen is operating normally, but volcanic ash may drift downwind. Be sure to check the latest volcanic activity information from the Japan Meteorological Agency and the Sapporo Regional Meteorological Observatory before visiting.

03 | Lake Mashu First Observation Deck (Teshikaga Town)

A caldera lake (Teshikaga Town) known as the "Misty Lake Mashu." Its mystical mist-shrouded appearance is itself spectacular. Check the official websites of Teshikaga Town and the Lake Mashu Tourism Association for the latest information on the First Observation Deck parking fee and winter road conditions or closures.

• Best angle: On clear days, the lake surface shines cobalt blue — so vivid it is called "Mashu Blue"
• Best season/time: A summer morning (6:00–7:00 a.m.) when the flowing mist makes for a dramatic shot
• Shooting angle: A vertical composition shooting over the observation deck fence emphasizes the depth of the lake and the breadth of the sky
• Access: About 20 minutes from JR Mashu Station by bus or taxi

04 | Goryokaku Tower (Hakodate City)

An observation tower offering a panoramic view of the Special Historic Site "Goryokaku" from above (the second observation floor is 90 m above ground). The star-shaped fort adorned with greenery or snow is straight out of a picture book. According to the official website, observation fees are: adults ¥1,200, junior/senior high school students ¥900, elementary school students ¥600 (under elementary school age free). Hours: 9:00–18:00 (ticket sales end at 17:50), open year-round.

• Best angle: Cherry blossoms in spring, snow-outlined star shape in winter — a different expression to enjoy every season
• Best season/time: For cherry blossoms, late April to early May. Since closing time is 18:00, sunset and night views from the observation deck are not possible in early summer to summer when the sun sets late
• Shooting angle: Press close to the window and shoot through the glass to take a fantastical photo using the reflection
• Access: About 15 minutes on foot from the Hakodate City Tram "Goryokaku-koen-mae" stop. There is no private car parking at Goryokaku Tower, so use nearby paid parking lots (Hakodate City Arts Hall Parking Lot, Hakodate City Goryokaku Sightseeing Parking Lot, etc.). Note that full exterior repainting and observation deck neck repairs have been under way since May 19 and are scheduled to continue to November 15, 2026 (tentative) — normal operations continue during the work period.

05 | Cape Kamui (Shakotan Town)

The walking trail "Charenca-no-Komichi" stretching to the tip of the sheer cliffs, and the "Shakotan Blue" sea glittering in emerald green. According to Shakotan Town's information, the round trip to the cape tip takes about 40 minutes on an undulating path. Never go beyond the fence or near the cliff edge.

• Best angle: On sunny days the clarity of the sea is overwhelming. The contrast between the rock face and the sea adds depth to photographs
• Best season/time: Early summer to autumn (the gate is closed in winter). According to the Shakotan Tourism Association, the Route-side entrance gate from July 1 onward is open 8:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00), subject to change depending on the season and weather (rain, wind, snow). In strong winds or heavy rain, walking on the trail to the cape tip is prohibited.
• Shooting angle: A vertical composition with the walking trail in the foreground is recommended — the path stretching to the tip creates a vivid sense of presence
• Access: About 1 hour 30 minutes by car from Otaru Station. By bus, connect the Hokkaido Chuo Bus Shakotan Line and Shakotan Town community bus. The Shakotan Tourism Association publishes a connecting timetable for "Otaru Station ↔ Shakotan Town (Bikuni Terminal) ↔ Cape Kamui." Brown bear sightings in the area may cause the trail to close without notice (in July 2026, the Shakotan Cape natural trail was temporarily closed due to a bear sighting).

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: The lavender at Farm Tomita is at its best from early to mid-July, the Blue Pond in May and June for fresh greenery and in October for autumn colors, and Cape Kamui from early summer to autumn. Many roads and walking trails are closed in winter.
• Opening hours / operating periods: Goryokaku Tower is open 9:00-18:00 (observation tickets sold until 17:50), open all year. According to the Shakotan Tourism Association, the entrance gate on the national road side of Cape Kamui is open 8:00-18:00 from July 1 onward (last entry 17:00), and this varies with the season and the weather. \"Lavender Batake Station\" on the JR Furano Line is a temporary station open only in summer.
• Fees: The observation deck at Goryokaku Tower costs 1,200 yen for adults, 900 yen for junior and senior high school students and 600 yen for elementary school students (free of charge for children under elementary school age, with discounts for groups of 30 or more and half price on presentation of a disability certificate). The Blue Pond parking lot is chargeable, and according to a notice from the Biei Town Tourism Association the fee changed on July 1, 2026 (previously 500 yen for an ordinary car). Please check the latest fees on the official websites of Biei Town and the Biei Town Tourism Association.
• Access: Farm Tomita is at Kisen Kita 15-go, Nakafurano Town, Sorachi District, Hokkaido (not in Furano City), about a 7-minute walk from \"Lavender Batake Station\" on the JR Furano Line (summer only). For the Blue Pond, take the Dohoku Bus Shirogane Line (bound for Shirogane Onsen) from JR Biei Station. Goryokaku Tower is about a 15-minute walk from the \"Goryokaku Koen-mae\" stop on the Hakodate city tram. Cape Kamui is about 1 hour 30 minutes by car from Otaru Station, or by bus a combination of the Hokkaido Chuo Bus Shakotan Line and the Shakotan Town community transport bus.
• Parking: Goryokaku Tower has no parking lot for private cars (use nearby paid parking such as the Hakodate Arts Hall parking lot or the Hakodate Goryokaku Tourist Parking Lot). Parking for tour buses costs 1,000 yen per vehicle. The Blue Pond parking lot uses automatic payment at the gate.
• Photography rules: Farm Tomita is a working farm that grows flowers. Never step into the fields or among the flowers. At the Blue Pond, Lake Mashu and Cape Kamui too, do not go beyond the fences or out to the water's edge or the edge of cliffs. Entering private land or farmland without permission is strictly forbidden. Follow the rules of each facility and municipality regarding flying drones.
• Safety notes: [Most important] The volcanic alert level for Mt. Tokachi was raised from 1 to 2 on June 18, 2026, and on July 22 a very small-scale eruption occurred at Crater 62-2. Entry is prohibited within roughly 1.5 km of the crater. According to Biei Town, the Shirogane district (the Blue Pond and Shirogane Onsen), Bogakudai and residential areas are not subject to the restrictions, and the Shirogane Onsen district is operating normally; however, volcanic smoke and ash may drift downwind, so you should check the volcanic information from the Japan Meteorological Agency and the Sapporo District Meteorological Observatory before visiting. At Cape Kamui, walking the trail leading to the tip of the cape is prohibited in strong winds or heavy rain. In the surrounding area, trails may also be closed without notice due to brown bear sightings (in July 2026 the Cape Shakotan Nature Trail was also temporarily closed after a bear sighting). Biei Town publishes \"Higumap,\" a brown bear sighting information service. At Goryokaku Tower, full repainting of the tower structure and repair work on the neck of the observation deck have been under way since May 19 and are scheduled to continue to November 15, 2026 (with normal operations continuing).
