Kashima Jingu and Suigo Itako Course

Located in the southeast of Ibaraki Prefecture, Kashima and Itako are an area alive with history and waterside charm. Kashima Jingu is known as one of the foremost ancient shrines of eastern Japan, and its grounds wrapped in a vast forest are truly solemn. Nearby Itako is famous as a water town, and in the iris season the flowers coloring the river together with the oar rowed boats welcome travelers.

Course Route

9:30 Start at Kashima Jingu Pass under the great torii and walk the approach wrapped in deep forest. The crisp air focuses the mind.

10:00 Worship at the main hall and inner shrine Pay respects at the historic main hall, then continue along the path leading to the inner shrine.

10:45 Tour the Kaname Stone and Mitarashi Pond Visit shrine highlights such as the Kaname Stone said to calm earthquakes and the clear spring water of Mitarashi Pond.

12:00 Lunch with local flavors Taste seafood and regional dishes around Kashima.

13:30 Move to Itako Head to the water town of Itako by car or train.

14:00 Maekawa Iris Garden and river tour In the iris season colorful flowers are in full bloom, and you can ride an oar rowed boat to enjoy the waterside charm.

Kashima Jingu, enshrining a deity of martial valor, has drawn the faith of warriors since ancient times. The giant trees and spring water in the grounds give visitors a refreshed feeling. The irises of Itako peak in early summer, and you can also enjoy events unique to a water town, such as demonstrations of the bridal boat.

Access and Tips

From Kashima Jingu Station the shrine is within walking distance. Itako can be reached by train or car, and it is especially busy during the iris festival. The grounds are wide with plenty of shade, so touring slowly in comfortable shoes is recommended.

Since the irises peak only during a limited period in early summer, aligning your trip with bloom information lets you fully enjoy the floral scenery. The shrine forest stays cool even in summer, making it perfect for a walk in the hot season.
