Geto Onsen
Welling up in the deep folds of the Yakeishi range west of Kitakami, Geto Onsen is one of Tohokus finest hidden springs. Said to date to the Heian period, it lies at the end of a narrow mountain road like a secluded hamlet. Its remote quiet and the strength of its waters draw those who make the journey.
Highlights
Several open-air baths dot the banks of the Geto River, each differing in character and temperature. Bathing to the sound of the flowing river is a rare pleasure. Nearby stands a massive travertine dome known as Tengu Rock, a natural formation built up over ages by the rising water and designated a natural monument.
Enjoying the Seasons
In the fresh green season the whole mountain brims with life, and summer brings the cool of the gorge. The autumn foliage dyes the slopes like brocade and draws many bathers. In winter the deep snow closes the road, so note that the operating season is limited.
Access and Basic Information
The spring is about an hour by car from JR Kitakami Station, up a winding mountain road. It operates mainly from spring through autumn and welcomes day bathers.
A Quick Tip
If you plan to visit several open-air baths, sturdy footwear is reassuring. The road is closed in winter, so always confirm the operating dates before you set out.
