Osawa Onsen

One of the springs in the Hanamaki South gorge, Osawa Onsen sits quietly beside the Toyosawa River. Its thatched-roof buildings and the breeze drifting across the water create a gentle sense of stepping back in time. This simple, warm-hearted inn is said to have been visited often by the poet Kenji Miyazawa.

Its signature feature is the open-air bath facing the river, where you soak to the murmur of the Toyosawa flowing just before you. Older healing wings remain within the grounds, their wooden corridors and carved transoms speaking to a long history. The water is soft and warms you gently to the core.

Access and Basic Information

The inn lies about twenty minutes by car from JR Hanamaki Station, deep within the Hanamaki hot spring area. Buses also run, and there are set hours for day visitors.

A Quick Tip

The riverside bath feels wonderfully open, but the footing can grow wet, so tread slowly. Staying in one of the old healing wings makes for an even quieter retreat.
