One of Japan's twelve surviving original castle keeps, Marugame Castle is famous for its stone walls — the tallest of any castle in Japan. When approximately 1,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees surround the fortifications during blossom season, the result is a scene of painterly perfection. The rough, grey stone walls against the soft pink of the blossoms and a clear blue sky create contrasts so beautiful that no number of photographs will ever feel like enough. Ritsurin Garden

One of Japan's finest strolling landscape gardens, Ritsurin Garden (Ritsurin-koen) in Takamatsu was developed over three generations of Takamatsu Domain lords, taking more than 100 years to complete. Today it is designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty — Japan's highest rank of scenic designation. In spring, cherry blossoms reflected in the ponds create images of refined Japanese garden beauty unlike anywhere else.

The garden's six ponds and thirteen artificial hills, designed to draw the mountains of Shikoku into the landscape as "borrowed scenery," create a depth and complexity that rewards hours of slow exploration. During cherry blossom season, the combination of traditional teahouses, stone lanterns, and arched bridges against a background of pink blossoms is an image of classical Japanese elegance.

Peak bloom: late March to early April. The garden opens early (7 a.m. year-round), making it one of the few places in Japan where you can photograph cherry blossoms in almost complete solitude in the early morning.

Seasonal events including boat rides on the garden ponds and performances in the historic teahouses are held during cherry blossom season — checking the official schedule adds to the experience.

Best times: Early morning (7 to 9 a.m.) before crowds arrive; the reflected cherry blossoms on the glassy pond surface are most beautiful in the calm of early morning.

Yashima (Yashima Plateau, Takamatsu City)

Rising as a flat-topped mesa above Takamatsu, Yashima is a plateau of volcanic origin famous as a battlefield of the 12th-century Genpei War — and today, as a cherry blossom destination with panoramic views across the Seto Inland Sea. In spring, cherry trees bloom along the plateau's edge and around the historic Yashima-ji Temple, with the sea gleaming far below as a backdrop.

The contrast between the spring blossoms and the island-studded sea of Setonaikai (Seto Inland Sea) visible from the plateau's edge is particularly compelling — a combination found at very few cherry blossom sites in all of Japan.

Peak Season and Viewing Information

Peak bloom: late March to early April, consistent with other Kagawa locations.

The Yashima Ropeway provides easy access to the plateau for those who prefer not to drive up the winding road. A full circuit of the plateau on foot takes about 2 hours, with multiple panoramic viewpoints along the way.

Best times: Morning for the combination of soft light and clear sea views; clear days after rain offer the best visibility across the Seto Inland Sea.

Access: About 15 minutes by bus from JR "Yashima Station" to the ropeway base; also accessible by car up Yashima Drive.

Planning a Kagawa Cherry Blossom Visit

All three spots peak around the same time, making it entirely feasible to visit all three in a single 2-day spring trip to Kagawa. The recommended approach: Day 1 — Marugame Castle morning, Ritsurin Garden afternoon; Day 2 — Yashima morning, with time for a Sanuki udon breakfast and a Honetsuki Dori lunch built into the schedule.

Cherry blossom timing in Kagawa typically runs slightly ahead of the national average due to Shikoku's mild climate. Always check the latest local flowering information before planning your exact dates.
