Hitoyoshi: A Mountain Retreat Where Clear Streams and a Castle Town Merge

Hitoyoshi City in southern Kumamoto Prefecture is a mountain castle town spreading along the Kuma River. Set in a basin surrounded on three sides by the Kyushu Mountains, it is a deep-mountain area known as the secluded Hitoyoshi-Kuma region. It holds a rare history in which the Sagara clan governed for nearly 700 years, from their arrival in 1186 until the Meiji Restoration. With clear streams, samurai residences, hot springs, and shochu, it is a destination that concentrates the appeal unique to a mountain village.

The Kuma River Descent and Clear Streams

A descent of the Kuma River, counted among Japan's three swiftest rivers, is the highlight of Hitoyoshi sightseeing. There are ways to enjoy it according to season and water level, from thrilling rafting down the rapids to a leisurely descent taking in the scenery. The riverside scenery is beautiful through all four seasons, enjoyable together with spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. Operation depends on water level and weather, so advance booking and same-day confirmation are recommended.

Hitoyoshi Castle Ruins and Samurai Residences

The Hitoyoshi Castle ruins standing along the Kuma River are the site of the Sagara clan's residence, designated a National Historic Site. The surrounding area was severely damaged by the flooding from the heavy rain of July 2020, but restoration and redevelopment are underway. The castle town also has scattered samurai residence sites, shrines, and temples that retain an Edo-period atmosphere, making for enjoyable historical strolls.

Hitoyoshi Onsen and Kuma Shochu

The Hitoyoshi-Kuma region is known as a producer of Kuma shochu, a rice-based shochu that is also a Geographical Indication region permitted to bear its place name. Characterized by deep flavor, comparing the products of the various breweries is one of its pleasures. Hitoyoshi Onsen is known for a spring quality gentle on the skin, with inns and public bathhouses scattered along the Kuma River.

Best Season

Rafting and river descents are comfortable when the water level is stable. Cherry blossoms peak in spring and foliage in autumn. The basin wrapped in morning mist in autumn is fantastical, offering scenery unique to Hitoyoshi.

Access and Basic Information

• Railway status (important): The Yatsushiro-Hitoyoshi section of the JR Hisatsu Line has remained suspended for a long time due to the flood damage of July 2020, and direct rail access is not available (recovery is expected to take many years). Always confirm the latest operation and substitute-transport status in advance
• Highway bus: From the Kumamoto direction, highway buses (such as routes serving the Hitoyoshi Interchange) are a main means of access. Check duration and frequency in advance
• By car: Hitoyoshi IC on the Kyushu Expressway is convenient. Accessible by drive from central Kumamoto or the Kagoshima direction
• Nearby: Hot springs, roadside stations, and historic sites are scattered along the Kuma River, making a car tour easy

• Thoroughly confirm access in advance: Because the Hisatsu Line remains suspended, planning around rail may leave you unable to reach the town. Planning around highway bus or car is the sure choice
• Booking rafting and river descents: Operation depends on water level and weather. Reserve ahead and confirm operation on the morning of your visit
• Consideration for recovery areas: In areas struck by the 2020 flood, restoration work continues in places. Follow instructions where roads are closed or facilities are shut

Hitoyoshi long had a strong image as a town to reach by rail on the Hisatsu Line, but because the line is now suspended for the long term, access is basically by car or highway bus. Not getting this wrong is the single most important point when planning. Once you arrive, one of Kyushu's most tranquil mountain villages awaits, colored by clear streams, shochu, and hot springs.

• Suspended section of the JR Hisatsu Line (most important): JR Kyushu's Service Information Following Disasters gives the suspended section of the Hisatsu Line as "between Yatsushiro and Yoshimatsu." The section south of Hitoyoshi (toward Yoshimatsu) is also suspended
• Substitute taxi transport: JR Kyushu operates taxi transport between Yatsushiro Station and Hitoyoshi Station (calling at Yatsushiro, Dan, Sakamoto, Hagi, Isshochi, Watari and Hitoyoshi stations). The notes state that "it can be used with commuter passes and ordinary tickets covering this section; however, discount tickets cannot be used," that it is "not operated on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays," that "as the taxis have a fixed capacity, you may not be able to board," and that "arrival may be delayed due to road conditions and the like, and connections with trains are not guaranteed," so it is safest not to count on it as a substitute for the railway
• Status of the railway's restoration: On April 1, 2025 (Reiwa 7), Kumamoto Prefecture and JR Kyushu exchanged the Final Agreement on the Restoration of the JR Hisatsu Line (Yatsushiro-Hitoyoshi Section) by Rail, which stipulates that "Party B shall restore the affected section by rail and shall begin restoration work from fiscal 2025 (Reiwa 7)." The stations to return to service are Dan, Sakamoto, Hagi, Kamase, Yoshio, Shiraishi, Kyusendo, Isshochi, Watari, Nishi-Hitoyoshi and Hitoyoshi
• Full reopening of the Kuma River Railroad: The Kuma River Railroad plans to resume operations along its entire line on Sunday, September 20, 2026 (Reiwa 8). On the same day Kawamura Station will be renamed Sagara Toshima Station and Higashi-Taragi Station will be renamed Taragi Shorenji Station
• Hitoyoshi Castle History Museum: Closed since the torrential rains of July 2020 (Reiwa 2), it reopened on July 11, 2025 (Reiwa 7). It is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last entry 4:30 p.m.) and closed every Tuesday (the following day when Tuesday is a public holiday) and over the New Year period (December 29 to January 3). • Kuma River boat descent (HASSENBA Hitoyoshi Hassenba, 333-1 Shimoshin-machi, Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture): The Clear Stream Revival Course costs 3,500 yen for adults, 2,100 yen for children and 1,500 yen for infants, and takes about 50 minutes (about 1 hour 20 minutes including the shuttle bus after disembarking), with departures at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00. You need to complete boarding procedures at HASSENBA at least 20 minutes before departure. When the water is high or low, safety takes priority and the service switches to the Kuma River Sightseeing Boat Baika no Watashi
• Kuma River Sightseeing Boat Baika no Watashi: 2,500 yen for adults, 1,000 yen for children and 500 yen for infants, taking about 30 minutes, with departures at 10:00 and 14:30 (extra sailings during Golden Week and the Obon period).
